  • Summary

Why
  • Nearly half the companies that lose their data
through disaster, never re-open, and 90 are out
    of business within two years.
  • Un-authorized access of Significant Financial
    losses
  • 56 of respondents reported some form of
unauthorized computer use- 2003 CSI Survey
  • 47 of CSI Survey respondents (251) were willing
and or able to quantify their financial losses.
    These losses totaled 201,797,340
  • 85 of organizations are heavily or totally
    dependent upon computer systems.
  • On average, by the sixth day of an outage,
companies' experience a 25 loss in daily
revenue by the 25th day it is 40.

WHY Cont
  • Financial and functional loss increases rapidly
after the onset of an outage.
  • Within two weeks of the loss of computer support,
75 of organizations reach critical or total loss
    of functioning.
  • 43 of companies that experience a disaster but
have no business recovery plan in place never
    reopen.
  • Of companies that experience a disaster but have
no tested business recovery plans in place, only
one in ten are still in business two years later.

BUSINESSES"

Is your business safe?
  • IT environment
  • Mission critical business
  • Technology used to reduce risks
  • Is your hardware reliable?
  • Business losses
  • Cost downtime per hour
  • Disruption impact to customers
  • Duration to restore operations
  • Ongoing operations
  • Acceptable downtime
  • Recovery duration
  • Plan for protecting data

6
What is your cost of downtime?
know your downtimecosts per hour, day, 2 days...
  • direct loss
  • compensatory payments
  • lost future revenues
  • billing losses
  • investment losses
  • number of employees impacted x hours out
  • revenue recognition
  • cash flow
  • lost discounts (a/p)
  • payment guarantees
  • credit rating
  • stock price
  • customers
  • suppliers
  • financial markets
  • banks
  • business partners

temporary employees, equipment rental, overtime
costs, extra shipping costs, travel expenses, etc.

HOT SITE
9
Concept Of Data Recovery Centre
  • Hot-Site
  •

  • Redundant equipment in data center with high
speed Telecommunications or Leased Line to
replicate the data in near real-time
  • During an outage, traffic to the production
system is automatically routed to the hot-site
    for continued operation
  • Allows for extremely rapid failover from critical
    scenarios

10
HOT SITE
High Bandwidth Required
11
HOT SITE
Primary (HQ)
Branches
High Bandwidth Required
12
Hot Site
  • Advantage
  • It allowed immediate IT resolution during
    disaster
  • No data lost at all during disaster
  • The best business practice for mission critical
    operation
  • Disadvantage
  • The most expensive solutions
  • Required both site maintenance hw/sw
  • During Virus attack or file corrupted, both get
    effected
  • Require a very high bandwidth for data
    replication

13
Costing Estimation
  • Hot Site (Small Business)
  • 1 Server ? RM 15K
  • Co-Locations Services ? RM 300 /Month
  • Internet Access ? RM 500/
    Month
  • Leased Line ? RM 3000
  • Another set of Software ? RM 8K
  • Replication Software ? RM 30K

14
WARM SITE
15
Concept Of Data Recovery Centre
  • Warm-Site
  •

  • Place equipment in other data center that is
    similar to your
  • production equipment.
  • Connect them with medium speed telecommunications
    to replicate
  • the data in batch (for example, nightly)
  • During an outage, servers at DR site will take
    over as a primary operation
  • and Traffic is routed to the DR site manually.

16
WARM SITE
Low Bandwidth Required
17
WARM SITE
Primary (HQ)
Branches
Low Bandwidth Required
18
Warm Site
  • Advantage
  • Slightly cheaper compare to Hot Site
  • Able to protect data during Virus attack or File
    corrupted
  • Does not require dedicated fibre/high bandwidth
    for data replication
  • Operation can be recover within few hours
  • Disadvantage
  • One day data missing during disaster
  • Still consider as an expensive solution

19
Costing Estimation
  • Warm Site (Small Business)
  • 1 Server ? RM 15K
  • Co-Locations Services ? RM 300 /Month
  • Internet Access ? RM 500/
    Month
  • Another set of Software ? RM 8K
  • Replication Software ? RM 15K

20
COLD SITE
21
Concept Of Data Recovery Centre
  • Cold-Site
  • Spare servers, storage and backup data are on
    hand
  • but not kept running.
  • Restoration begins by powering up servers,
    updating software
  • and restoring data from backup
  • User will be able to access to DR site via
    internet

22
COLD SITE
23
COLD SITE
Via Tapes
24
Cold Site
  • Advantage
  • The cheapest solution
  • Less maintenance for sw/hw
  • Does not require any link to primary site
  • Does not have any impact if primary site servers
    infected by Virus
  • Disadvantage
  • Take a long time to recover the operation
  • Data lost duration is longer

25
Costing Estimation
  • Cold Site (Small Business)
  • 1 Server ? RM 15K
  • Co-Locations Services ? RM 300 /Month
  • Internet Access ? RM 200/ Month
  • Post Services ? RM 100
    /Month

26
Component in DRC
  • Servers
  • Replications Software
  • Leased Line
  • Backup Drive/Software
  • Data Centre Services/Facilities
  • Internet Access
  • Engineers
  • Locations

27
What For You?
What's right for you? How much down time can
you afford? A Hot Site can provide almost 100 up
time in even the most extreme disasters. What
is your budget? Hot sites are more expensive
than warm sites or cold sites.
