Objective
To improve quality of viscosity for incoming
batches of paint and find optimum additive
quantity of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (A44).
Problem Statement
Iowa Paint Manufacturing Company produces quality
paints and coatings. Viscosity is an important
factor in producing quality paints and the
company requires the initial batches of paints to
be in a specific viscosity range. Satin Acrylic
latex paint, produced by the company, is one of
the most commonly used interior paints by
professional contractors. The required viscosity
range for this paint is from 95-100 Krebs but
currently it has a low initial viscosity factor.
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC), also known as A44,
is a paint thickener that increases the viscosity
of the paint. Presently Iowa Paint uses a trial
and error technique to get the viscosity within
the specified range using A44.

Solution equations are presented for each size of
paint tank used by Iowa Paint For each case x
