• Born in Turjillo, Spain 1474, 1478?
• Parents never married
• Never attended school
• Was a pig herder for 15 years
• In 1502 he moved to the West Indies

Exploration

• Found land and called it Lima
• In 1527 left to find gold, crops, and explore for
  the Spanish crown
• Found the Inca culture and land

• Set out for Peru in 1530 with 180 men and 37
  horses
• Landed on the west coast of Peru
• Climbed the Andes mountains and found a
  messenger/guide that was sent from the King of
  the Incas
