• The Nankai trough marks the boundary where the
  Philippines tectonic plate is subducting beneath
  Japan.
• Large earthquakes have been generated along this
  boundary every 100-150 years.
• The section along Tokai has not ruptured since
  1854.

• At present, the land near Shizuoka is sinking
  toward the Nankai trough at approximately 5
  mm/year.
• Japans Earthquake Research Institute is on
  record saying that the Tokai earthquake
  occurrence is imminent.

• The Government of Japan expects its next great
  earthquake to be the Tokai Earthquake.
• The precise area along the Pacific coast about
  100 miles southwest of Tokyo that is expected to
  be affected has been delineated by law and is the
  focus of intensive preparations.

  depending on the amount of advance warning and
  the time of day it occurs.

  on the concept of pre-slip.
• Pre-slip is based on laboratory experiments,
  which indicate that a rock slips a little before
  it ultimately fails.
• Strain meters are deployed throughout the Tokai
  area to provide as much advance warning as
  possible.
