2What Is Plot?
- Plot a series of related events that make up a
story. You know, the important events that
happen in a story. - Plot its driven by one or more conflicts, or
goals, that the main character(s) has.
Cinderella wants to go to the Princes Ball.
Her stepmother and stepsisters try to keep her
from going by giving her lots of work. Her Fairy
God- mother helps her. She meets the Prince. He
likes her. She flees at midnight, but loses her
glass slipper. He tries slipper on many women.
It fits Cinderella. They get married. Yee-Haw!!
3What Makes Up a Plot?
- A Plot has four parts.
- Basic Situation (AKA Exposition)
- Complications
- Climax
- Resolution, or Denouement
4Parts of Plot Basic Situation
- Basic Situation
- is where the main characters are introduced.
- reveals where the story takes place (Setting).
- is where primary conflict, or main goal, of the
main character is established.
5Parts of Plot Complications
- Complications
- arise when the main character(s) takes steps to
resolve the conflict, or achieve his or her main
goal, introduced in the Basic Situation.
6Parts of Plot Climax
- The Climax
- is the moment of greatest emotional intensity
or suspense. - marks the moment when the conflict must be
resolved, or goal achieved, in one way or
another.

7Parts of Plot Resolution
- The Resolution
- is where the reader finds out what happens to
the main character(s) after the goal is
achieved, or the main conflict is resolved. - often ties up any loose ends in the story, and
makes it feel like the story is over.
In Cinderella, the resolution is that they
live happily ever after.

- Conflict
- is the struggle or clash between opposing
characters or forces. It creates the goal. - drives the entire plot, from Basic Situation to
the Resolution - may be internal or external
