  • Dear Reader,
  • Today in this project you will learn about five
    countries in Europe Germany, Spain, France,
    Portugal and Italy. You will learn about the
    foods, the languages, the sports and more.

Landforms
France - The area of France is 551,670 square
kilometers. There are mountains called the Jura
Mountains. The longest river in the country is
the Dordogne. Here the fairy tale castles are as
beautiful as the countryside. Italy - The area of
Italy is 301,225 square kilometers. This
beautiful country has the Southern Alps, which
unfold into a broad plain studded with natural
and and man-made lakes. Spain - The area of Spain
is 504,781 square kilometers. From the coast of
Spain the land rises to the southern edge of
Spains arid and vast central plateau.

Landforms
Germany - The area of Germany is 357,000 square
kilometers. This country in Europe has a lot of
thick forests, high mountains, deep valleys and
broad plains. In Southern Germany are the
countrys highest mountain peaks, the Alps or
Erzgebirge. Portugal - The area of Portugal is
94,250 square kilometers. In the North of
Portugal there are mountains, streams and rivers.
There is also lush greenness due to the coastal
rains.

Italy - Italys population is 57,500,000. Germany
- Germanys population is 80,300,000. Spain -
Spains population is 40,358,400 Portugal -
Portugals population is 9,833,000. France -
Frances population is 58,317,450.

  • France - The common foods found in France are
    seafood, patisseries, wine, Baguettes (a type of
    bread), choucroute (a cabbage dish) and
    ratatouille.
  • Portugal - The common foods found in Portugal are
    seafood, bread, wine and potatoes.

  • Italy - Some common foods found in Italy are
    pizza, bread, soup, wine and all the varieties of
    pastas
  • Germany - Some common foods found in Germany are
    potatoes, vegetables, bread, sausages, schnitzel
    and beer.
  • Spain - Some common foods found in Spain are
    fish, tomatoes and sausages.

  • Italy - Some of the famous people in Italy were
    Leonardo DaVinci, Galileo Galilee, Voltaire,
    Alessandra and Caesar.
  • France - A famous person in France was Joan of
    Arc.
  • Germany- Some famous people in Germany were
    Hitler and the Grim Brothers.

  • Portugal - The famous people in Portugal are
    mostly soccer players.
  • Spain - A famous person in Spain was Pablo
    Picasso, a famous artist.

Spain - The most common language in Spain is
Spanish. Portugal - The most common language in
Portugal is Portuguese. Italy - The most common
language in Italy is Italian. Germany - The most
common language in Germany is High German. France
- The most common language in France is French.

Celebrations and Traditions
Italy - Some celebrations in Italy are Christmas
and New Years Eve. In Italy when they have
weddings they throw confetti at the newly
weds. Spain - Some celebrations and traditions in
Spain are La Tamborrada, La Candeleria, La Diada
de Sant Jordi, and La Feria. Germany - Some
traditions and celebrations in Germany are
Christmas and New Years. A traditional greeting
at Christmas is Froehliche Weitnachten.

Celebrations and Traditions
France - Some celebrations in France are
Christmas and Poisson DAvril. Traditions in
France include the making of crepes and the
harvest celebrations in Normandy and Champaign
when the grapes are harvested. Portugal - A
celebration in Portugal is Christmas. The birth
of Jesus Christ is very important in these five
countries.

Clothing and Fashions
Men - Long robes came into fashion at the end of
the 11th century. The newer fashions were
easier for active men to wear. The bliauts, or
tunics were shorter. The sleeves were moderately
wide or close fitting. Today the clothing in
Europe is quite similar to that of Canada. Women
- At one time in history the longer your sleeves,
(dress, vial etc.) were, the wealthier you must
be. If one was rich, she could not move very
fast without tripping herself. Womens fashions
are much the same as those in Canada these days,
and Paris is one of the most important fashion
centres in the world.

Sports
Soccer - Soccer is a very popular sport in
Europe. There are many different teams. The
object of the game is to put the soccer ball into
the net without touching it with your hands. The
other team tries to block you. Cricket - Cricket
is also a very popular sport in Europe. The
object of the game is to hit the ball with a flat
stick into the metal open object. Hacky sac -
Hacky sac is also a popular sport. The object of
the game is to keep the sac in the air without
using your hands. You have to use your legs,
feet and head.
