EndNote can create bibliographies

• Stores bibliographic information which you can
  use to format in reference style required for
  both in-text and reference lists
• reports, essays, theses
• journal articles different journal styles

• for references by author, title, keyword
• for personal notes and annotations
• Customize

• Output styles (referencing styles) EndNote X
  includes 2000 individual bibliographic styles
  e.g. APA 5th

Manually typing in references

• Authors - one per line
• Recommended format for authors
• Howard, Steven Robert
• Organisations put a comma at the end
• University of Melbourne,
• Capitalisation of titles is your responsibility
• Do not try and add formatting such as
  underlining, italics

Create own library

• Enable some key features
• Word shortcut on EndNote
• Journal articles in pdf format can be attached to
  records
• linking to full text articles via (OpenURL)

• Direct export Business Source Premier
• Import using a filter PsycINFO

Editing citations bibliography layout

• It is not possible to edit citations or
  bibliography directly using Word, as direct edits
  are lost each time EndNote formats the
  bibliography.
• Formatted citations may be edited using Edit
  Citation(s) from the EndNote toolbar
• Bibliography layout may be edited using Format
  Bibliography gt Layout tab

Editing Endnote citations in Word

• Formatted citations may be edited - click into
  the citation select Edit Citation(s) from
  EndNote toolbar
• Prefix text to be displayed immediately before
  the citation text. e.g. Johnston (cited in Coles,
  2005)
• Suffix for page numbers, e.g. (Coles, 2005,
  p.45)
• Pages The Pages field does not work for many
  styles as it does not display numbers, so use
  Suffix.
• Exclude Author tick this box to omit the author
  name from the formatted citation. e.g. Coles
  (2005).
• Exclude Year tick this box to omit the date from
  the formatted citation.

Editing the bibliography layout

• Click on the Format Bibliography button and
  select the Layout tab. Options
• font font size,
• indents,
• line spacing,
• spacing between bibliography entries,
• title

Editing an Output Style

• Edit menu, gtOutput Styles
• Make a copy Filegt Save As
• This will also keep the original style unchanged,
  in the event that you need to use it later.
• Make changes to citations or bibliography
• e.g. Change author capitalisation in Harvard
  (demonstration)

Managing Endnote Word

• Use only one Endnote library per paper/ essay/
  article/ group project
• Always save backup copies of your work, including
  EndNote Libraries ( Filegt Save A Copy As ) keep
  in a different location preferably not the same
  computer!
• e.g. Thesis Copy 29August.enl
• overwrite backup copies / new date
• Turn off Instant Formatting (Cite While You
  Write) for large documents essential for
  chapters of a thesis (master documents).
• Proofread your bibliographic information - errors
  in Endnote errors in Word
