Planets

• Here are the names of all nine planets in order
  from nearest to farthest away from the sun
• Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
  Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto
• The conditions on each planet are very different,
  for example, Pluto has very different weather
  than we do on Earth

• Not only do we have a moon, but other planets
  have moons as well
• The moon is the second brightest object in the
  solar system next to the sun
• The moon orbits around the earth once per month

• The moon has no atmosphere
• The moons crust is about 68 km thick!
• Gravitational pulls between the moon and the
  Earth affect the oceans tide

• The sun is our main energy source
• The sun is the largest object in the solar system
• It contains more than 99.8 of the total mass of
  the solar system
• The sun is a star

• The sun is made up of 70 Hydrogen, 28 Helium,
  and 2 other metals
• The surface of the sun is about 5800K in
  temperatureVERY HOT!

The Birth of a Star

• A star starts out as a mass of gas.
• The temperature rises, and a nucleus is formed.
  Thus, a star is born!!

The Death of a Star

• The star continues to shine brightly until all
  nuclear energy is exhausted and the star enters
  the final stage of its life
• This is where the star will explode, creating
  a nova- a big, bright explosion

Comets

• Comets have a long tail that is made up of ices
  and dust
• Comets are sometimes called dirty snowballs

Interesting Facts

• The planet Uranus, lies on its side at a 98
  degree angle
• The planet Pluto is nearly 4 billion miles from
  the sun!!
• A black hole is created when a star explodes at
  the end of its life
• It takes 8 minutes for sunlight to hit the Earth
