Title: Compressed Calendar
1Compressed Calendar
2Background
- First discussed by Senate in 2005
- Vote taken in spring 2006
- Faculty 82 in favor of compressed
- Students 71 in favor of compressed
- College Council formed a Sub-committee in
November 2006 - Members include faculty, administration and
classified
3- Much has changed since the spring 2006 vote
including - No longer being encouraged by administration as a
method to increase FTE funding - Classes must end on 5 minute multiplies
- 1005 or 1010 or 1015 not 1003 or 1007
- No classes can be 51 64 minutes in length (more
on that later) - Classes must be in a four-day/week format
- Mon-Thurs format with Friday having one day/week
classes
4- Because of all the changes the sub-committee
would like to present the Compressed Calendar and
Schedule widely to faculty and then have another
faculty-wide vote this April.
5The Calendar
- The calendar must comply with weeks days of
instruction - 16 weeks (3 days of Mon-Fri instruction)
- 175 days of instruction
- The Fall Spring semesters of the proposed
Compressed Calendar would be 16.6 weeks long - Assumes 1 mandatory flex day 2 flexible flex
days
6- Winter intersession is an optional session
- No one will have to teach in this intersession
- Hopefully instructors will create new perhaps
innovative classes to meet during winter
intersession.

9Class Meeting Times
- Because the semester is not as long, each class
meeting must be somewhat longer - Dead Zone
- The state will not pay for class times between 51
and 64 minutes, so a class must be 50 minutes or
65 minutes or greater.
10To Calculate Minutes a Class Must Meet
Basic Equation (Number of units) x 17.5 ? 16.6
? (Number of class meetings) Contact hours
per meeting Contact hours per meeting x 50
minutes per hour minutes per class
meeting This equation assumes that we have a 16
week semester with 3 flex days each semester (1
mandatory and 2 floating). This will make a term
length multiplier (TLM) of 16.6. (The 3 days of
flex constitute 3/5 or 0.6 of a week.)
11Class Schedule
- We took the minutes that classes must meet and
designed a schedule showing times a class would
meet. - We tried to leave a semi-blank time around noon
on Thurs to increase ASB activities provide a
time for faculty to meet
12Possible Class Meeting TimesMon-Wed
13Possible Class Meeting TimesTues-Thurs
14Class Meeting Times
- Will work for faculty and students to take or
teach similar load to current load
15Student with 20 units
16Meet Vote on Calendar
- Everyone is invited to the college wide
information meeting on April 17th from 2-4 P.M.
in Room 1. - Full time and adjunct faculty will hold a vote on
April 24 and 25 to indicate their preferences.
