• Using physical and human features to describe
  what a place is like
• Physical plants, animals, soil composition,
  rainfall, topography, etc.
• Human language, religion, race/ethnicity,

• asks what are some of the common characteristics
  found here?
• If an area has one or more characteristics that
  make it different from surrounding areas
• Three types of region formal, functional and
  perceptive

Formal Region

• Has one or more common feature that makes it
  different from surrounding area
• Based on many things population, income levels,
  rainfall levels, temperature, etc.
• Physical features (Rocky Mountains)
• Economic Features (Rust Belt)

Functional Region

• Made up of different places that are linked
  together and function as a unit
• Most are organized around a central point and
  surrounding areas are linked to this point
• Examples cities and shopping malls both serve as
  centers to surrounding areas
• City transit systems (MARTA)

• Region that reflect human feelings and attitudes
• Much of what we view is influenced by our ways of
  life and experiences changes how we perceive
  the world

• The South (also known as Dixie)
