Problem Description
  • Over the past few years, refugees in an un-named
developing country have been receiving adequate
food supplies and products except raw eggs.
  • Stock, Inc. has been contracted by the host
government to design and build a Trans-River Egg
Delivery System (TREDS). Each TREDS may include a
delivery system and egg protection unit. The
host government would like to purchase 50 mobile
TREDS at fair market value from Stock, Inc.
  • Due to the fact that the refugee camps are not
only located across rebel-patrolled rivers, but
are also quite small and surrounded by
impenetrable jungles, the TREDS must be accurate
    when delivering raw eggs.
  • TREDS must use a renewable energy source - solar,
wind, hydro, or elastic energy. No external
power source other than those specified is
available. Batteries or use of combustible
    materials are not allowed.

4
Reward
  • In its capacity as customer, Stock, Inc. has
entered into a mutually and divided binding
contract to purchase the three "Best" TREDS
designs produced. Stock, Inc. will make offers of
  • 50 to the design team of the TREDS with the
Best Design for their design and prototype.
  • 25 offer will be made to the design team with
    the "Second Best" design
  • 10 will be offered to the team with the "Third
    Best" design.

Objectives
  • The objectives of Acme Inc. when building the
    Catapult 1000 are to
  • deliver a raw egg to the far side of a 30-foot
wide river inside a 10-foot diameter camp area
  • ensure the egg arrives undamaged
  • use of no human power, except one index finger to
    initiate the egg delivery system
  • require no more than 60 seconds, after being
handed a single raw egg, to set up the TREDS

Preliminary Ideas
7
Preliminary Ideas
  • The first idea we had was to use a slingshot type
    of launcher.
  • Our second and final idea was a cartoon-based
catapult used by the great Wile E. Coyote

8
Analysis
  • Energy was conserved throughout testing by having
an stopper located at the back of the catapult.
This was to ensure consistency with strength,
distance, and power of the bungee cord.

9
Extra Support
  • In order to increase power, we added a second
    bungee cord.

10
Animated Design
  • The reason why this design was selected over the
slingshot method was to ensure maximum
    repeatability and consistency.

11
Performance
Overall as a group, we did pretty well. On Both
attempts, we were within 10 inches of the center
but the egg broke both times. This was a bummer,
but the experience was great.
12
Final Design
13
Suggested Improvements
  • Use a different brand of water bottle that can
    absorb more damage.
  • More cushion for the landing

Acknowledgements
  • Thanks to the Acme Inc. team for all their hard
    work.
  • Thanks to all the workers in the Manufacturers
    lab
