3Abstract
- Our team will design a breath analyzer to compete
with medium range models currently on the market,
in terms of both price and accuracy. - Primary challenges of the project
- Accuracy
- Cost
- Packaging
4 Technical and Practical Constraints
Constraints
Name Description
Sensor Semiconductor Oxide Sensor

7Objectives
- Design a reliable breath analyzer that
- is accurate within 10
- is competitively priced
- consumes little power
- gives consistent results
8User Interface
- The Portable BAC Analyzer is
- designed to aid the user in
- making safe decisions
- concerning the operation of a
- motor vehicle by indicating
- blood alcohol contents
- ranging from 0.00 to 0.40.
9Block Diagram
10Oxide Sensor
- TGS 2620 Ethanol Sensor
- Low Power Consumption
- High Sensitivity to alcohol
- Long life and low cost
11PIC Pinout Configuration
12Power Supply
- Camera Battery
- 6V (1)
- 250mAH
13Camera Battery
Battery good for approx. 45 min. of continuous use
14Watch Batteries
Neither of these batteries will work
15Simulations
- 2nd order polynomial function generated by
Matlab. - BAC 0.0425x² - 0.0977x 0.0406 where x is the
voltage across the load resistor.
16Software
- Takes A/D values from gas sensors load resistor
and from temp sensor - Uses an equation to determine corresponding BAC
using these values - Can also display ambient temperature
- Auto power off feature saves battery life
17Old Power ConsumptionBreakdown
- Oxide Sensor 40 mA
- PIC 5 mA
- Display 250 mA
- Total 295 mA
18New Power Consumption
- Oxide Sensor 40 mA
- PIC 5 mA
- Display 10 mA
- Total 55 mA
