The AIMs of Scouting

• To build character (self-reliance,
  self-discipline, selfconfidence, and
  self-respect)
• To Foster Citizenship (participate in community
  service projects, voting in Troop elections, and
  by encouraging youth to serve as Patrol and Troop
  officers)
• To develop Fitness (physical and mental). These
  words are right in the scout oath
• to keep myself physically strong, mentally
  awake, and morally straight
• These aims represent the long term Scouting
  Goals that we, as leaders, want for every boy who
  joins Troop 761

How boys scouts is different than cub scouts

• Advancement in Boy Scouts is each scouts
  responsibility. Through first class they will
  work with older scouts fulfilling certain
  requirements, however, it is up to each
  individual to map out his own advancement.
  Troop 761 has many leaders that are available to
  help guide them however, Scouts should seek
  help from adults when it is needed
• Boy Run Troop The adult leaders are primarily
  here to help facilitate the boys program. Our
  main goal is to teach the boys how to become
  leaders. We allow the boys to make mistakes
  (that is how they learn) barring any safety
  concerns
• Chaos - As with any boy run troop there will
  be organized chaos. If you have visited any
  boy run troops, you will recognize the organized
  Chaos we are talking about. Troop 761 is no
  exception. Dont be alarmed by it..it is
  completely normal. There really is a method to
  their Chaos. Everyone has a job to doand it
  always gets done.

Boys Responsibilities

• Weekly meeting agendas
• Skill Instruction
• Monthly PLC Meetings where we plan the coming
  months activities
• Set the annual activity schedule and present to
  the Troop committee for approval
• Handle sign offs for rank advancements through
  First Class (Scout Skills)
• All of this is outlined in the Boy Scout
  Handbook. This is the best resource for getting
  started on the right path. Encourage your sons to
  read it and learn how to easily find answers

Patrol Method / New Boy Patrol

• All new scouts form New boy patrols
• Boys benefit from shared advancement goals
• Rotating leadership (patrol leader) within the
  new boy patrol
• Patrol Guide (scout that is 1st class or above)
  is assigned to each New Boy Patrol to assist
  with the Patrol Method defined by BSA
• We target advancement to the rank of First Class
  within the first year

Training

• Troop Holds Junior Leader Training (JLT) every
  year.
• Additional training is offered by the Goose
  Creek District
• Advanced JLT training offered by other Districts
• Weekly skills training sessions established by
  the scouts themselves

Troop 761 Make-up

• Currently the Troop has 55 scouts and 44
  registered adults, which includes 28 Assistant
  Scoutmasters
• Currently we have 5 scout patrols and 1 adult
  (Old Goat) patrol
• Several boys and adults within Troop active in
  Order Of the Arrow (OA) including district events
  planning
• Troop 761 had 3 Eagles in 2006with 15 current
  Life rank scouts. Total of 28 Eagle Scouts
  since Troop 761 was chartered in 1996

Summer Camp

• Troop 761 goes to Summer Camp every year. Our
  troop likes to attend different camps each year
• In 2003, 39 of us went to Camp Chickahominy in
  the Colonial Council
• In 2004, 34 of us went to Camp Henson in the
  DelMarVa Council
• In 2005, 23 attended Rodney Scout Reservation in
  the DelMarVa Council. Troop 761 also had a large
  contingent of scouts and leaders attend the
  National Jamboree.
• In 2006, 39 attended Camp Ottari and 10 attended
  Claytor Lake high adventure aquatics base.
• In 2007 we have reservations at Camp Henson the
  week of June 24-30

High Adventure Trips

• In 2004, 14 scouts and scouters spent a week at
  Northern Tiers, Sommers Canoe Base in Ely,
  Minnesota where they trekked across hundreds of
  miles of designated wilderness.
• In 2006 Troop 761 had 14 scouts and scouters
  spent a week at the Florida National High
  Adventure Sea Base in the Florida Keys where they
  went snorkeling, deep sea fishing, kayaking,
  sailing and exploring local culture.
• In 2006 we also had 10 scouts and scouters spend
  a week at Claytor Lake aquatics base for their
  PADI Scuba certification and other aquatics merit
  badges such as motor boating, water skiing, small
  boat sailing, etc.
• All high adventure trips are planned as Venture
  Patrol outings, outside of our regularly
  scheduled monthly campouts.

Charter Organization

• Christian Fellowship Church is our Charter
  Organization
• Provides use of the facilities including outdoor
  pavilion, gymnasium, game room, classrooms and
  sanctuaries to conduct scout business
• Esther Schaeffer (Our Charter Organization
  Representative) and Phil Holliday (Christian
  Fellowship Churchs executive Officer) are VERY
  supportive of our troop and the scouting
  movement. Pastor Holliday is an Eagle scout
  himself, and fully understands the profound
  impact that scouting has on our youth
• Currently forming Cub Scout Pack 761

Troop Equipment

• Our Charter Organization has donated a school
  bus to the Troop. We are always looking for
  parents willing to get their CDL licenses and
  drive the bus on scout related outings /
  activities.
• We have an equipment trailer with troop logo
  that holds all of the troops gear. We take it on
  virtually every outing, and need people to help
  tow it.
• Troop purchased all new tents 3 years ago.
• Patrols are responsible for replacing any
  abused equipment.

Things New Scouts Need

• Full Uniform
• Personal Camping gear
• - backpack
• sleeping bag bed roll
• poncho
• Flashlight (small LED, headlamp)
• nalgene water bottle
• Boots with good ankle support. Sneakers are a
  recipe for a miserable camping experience!
• Scout handbook (take it with them on ALL outings)

Parent Participation

• We strongly encourage each family to contribute
  their time to the troop in some capacity
• Not all volunteers must wear uniforms
• There are many ways to help the troop and the
  leaders provide a great program for the scouts

Dues, Finances, Fund Raising

• Unit Assets Individual Scout Accounts
• Annual dues are 100 per boy, 2nd Boy in the same
  family is 75
• Fundraisers
• We have sold mulch
• We have sold popcorn
• We plan to sell bedded plants in the spring
• Car washes
• Open to new (and unique) fundraising ideas

• Contact Jeff Turner as soon as possible with
  your sons crossover date.
• Most Cub Scout packs provide Webelos with a Boy
  Scout handbook when they crossover.
• Troop 761 provides your son with his
  neckerchief, neckerchief slide, troop numerals
  and red epaulets during his crossover.
• Troop 761 will provide you with a new parent
  packet with answers to most questions you may
  have.
• We have a very enthusiastic team of scouts and
  leaders to perform crossover ceremonies. Dont
  be surprised if half of Troop 761 shows up!
