Why Do We Rank Students?

• Class rank is used solely for the purposes of
  college admissions and scholarship eligibility.

• Grades in college preparatory courses
  
• Degree of rigor throughout high school

What Does the Policy Do?

• The policy measures each students academic
  performance and rigor in core academic courses
  (English, math, science, and social studies) and
  foreign language courses and all Pre-AP and AP
  courses.

• This policy uses cumulative weighted rank
  points for selected courses.

Clarifications of the Policy

• Rank factors for all Advanced Placement (AP),
  Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) and Honors
  courses
• Pre-AP/GT-Pre-AP/Honors 1.15
• AP/GT-AP 1.29

Clarifications cont.

• Exclude all Summer School and Evening School
  courses from rank
• Limit the number of semester courses used in the
  calculation of class rank to no more than eight
  per semester (the highest eight ranked grades
  will be used)

• Include all AP and Pre-AP non-core courses in
  calculation of class rank
• Break any ties between students by using a
  secondary indicator based on the number of
  courses taken for which a weight of 1.15 and/or
  1.29 was given

What is Not Included in Rank?

• Second semester courses of the final year
• Summer school Evening School courses
• Repeated courses in high school
• No Credit courses due to attendance issues
• Pass/fail courses

• High School courses with credit earned in middle
  school
• Summer foreign study programs
• Grades exempted by an ARD committee
• Correspondence courses
• Credit by examination

How is Class Rank Now Calculated?

• Students entering the ninth grade beginning in
  2004 - 2005 or after accumulate rank points based
  on only
• core academic courses (English, math, science and
  social studies),
• foreign language courses, and
• any Pre-AP and AP courses

How is Rank CalculatedCont.

• Grades in all Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) and
  GT/Pre-AP courses are multiplied by a weight
  factor of 1.15
• Grades in all Advanced Placement (AP) and GT/AP
  courses are multiplied by a weight factor of 1.29

How is Rank Calculated? Cont.

• Grades in core honors courses are multiplied by
  a weight factor of 1.15
• Grades in all regular level courses are
  multiplied by 1.0
• Grades in all content modified courses are
  multiplied by .90

• Course rank points for each semester are
  calculated and all rank points are added for a
  cumulative rank point total
• Students are then placed in rank order by their
  cumulative rank point total

How is Rank Calculated? Cont.

• Students are ranked with the class with whom
  they entered high school so all students being
  ranked together will have completed the same
  number of regular school year semesters.

When is Ranking Provided?

• Two-Semester Rank Early indicator given in the
  fall after completion of the second semester to
  be used as a planning tool for students and
  parents
• Four-Semester Rank Second early indicator given
  in the fall after completion of the fourth
  semester to be used as a planning tool for
  students and parents

• Official Rank Class Rank given in the fall
  after the completion of the sixth semester to be
  used for college admission
• Final Rank Class Rank given after completion of
  the seventh semester to be used for college
  admission
