Objectives

• My intended audience is a health class ranging
  from grades 8 to 12
• From this lesson the students will gain knowledge
  of the good and bad uses of steroids.
• The students will also know the mental and
  physiological side effects of steroids.

Assessment

• After the presentation I will give an informal
  assessment to the class and ask them basic
  questions about what I went over.
• This assessment will let me know what they got
  out of the presentation and also hopefully
  clarify any hanging questions they have about
  steroids.

What are steroids?

• Steroids are any of a large group of fat-soluble
  organic compounds, as the sterols, bile acids,
  and sex hormones, most of which have specific
  physiological action.

Medicinal use of steroids

• Steroids have been used for decades to promote
  bone growth, induce male puberty, and in the
  treatment of chronic wasting conditions, such as
  cancer and AIDS.

Personal use of steroids

• One may choose to use steroids due to social
  emotional pressures, cosmetic reasons, athletic
  gains, pressures that come from athletics, or
  bodybuilding.
• Steroids have been proven to increase muscle mass
  and decrease body fat.

How are anabolic steroids used and abused?

• Anabolic steroids can be taken orally, by
  injection or in creams or gels. Dosages
  prescribed by doctors will depend on the medical
  condition, its severity and age of the patient.
• In the illegal use of this group of steroids
  dosages are highly variable and can be 10 to 40,
  sometimes a 100 times higher than the recommended
  dose.
