Literary Terms

• Staging includes the physical features, from
  scenery, costumes, lighting, and sound
• Stage Directions include the actors movements
  and the way they speak
• Usually printed in italics and set in brackets

Drama

• Story written to be performed by actors
• Divided into parts called acts, and smaller parts
  called scenes
• Script made up of dialogue and stage directions
• Dialogue words spoken by actors

• Historical Context includes the time, place,
  customs, political forces, cultural attitudes,
  and major events of the period
• Flashback a scene within a story that
  interrupts the sequence of events to relate
  events that occurred in the past
• Epiphany a sudden realization

• Foreshadowing authors use of clues to hint at
  what might happen later in the story. Used to
  build expectations and to create suspense
• Tragedy downfall for main character(s)
• Frame Story story within a story (present,
  past, present)

Suspense

• A feeling of anxious uncertainty about the
  outcome of events in a literary work.
• Writers create this by raising questions in the
  readers minds
