The colonnade extends on both sides of the
basilica and consists of 284 columns and 88
pillars. Resting on top of the roof are the
statues of 140 saints (70 on each side).

On June 28, 1633 Pope Urban VIII unveiled
Bernini's baldacchino (canopy) of St Peter's.
Four gilt bronze spiral columns (also called
Solomnic columns) rise from their marble
plinths, which are decorated on both external
sides with the Barberini coat of arms and bees, a
symbol of the family.
