SCORE AND SLIP
  • This refers to a method of joining two pieces of
clay together. First, you scratch the surfaces
that will be sticking together. Then you wet the
surface with some slip, using it like glue. Next,
you press the two pieces together.

3
COIL
  • This is the technique of building ceramic forms
by rolling out coils, or ropes, of clay and
joining them together with the fingers or a tool.

4
SLIP
  • This is liquid clay. It can be used like a
    glue when used with scoring.

5
BISQUE
  • This is the process of heating the pottery to a
specific temperature in order to bring about a
particular change in the clay or the surface.

6
Stages of DryingLEATHER HARD
  • Stage of drying when the clay is not wet. It can
hold its own shape and is easily carved or
trimmed. It is not completely dry yet.

7
Parts of the VaseNECK
  • The (usually) narrower part that leads from the
body of the vase to the mouth.

8
Stages of Dryness WET STAGE
  • Stage of drying when the clay is moldable. This
is what the clay is called directly out of the
    bag.

9
Greenware
  • This refers to ceramic ware that has not been
    fired.

10
Molding
  • In this technique, flat slabs of clay are pressed
into these in order to create various shapes or
forms. The African masks are an example.

11
Handbuilding
  • This term refers to the one of several techniques
of building pots using the only the hands and
simple tools rather than the potters wheel.

12
BISQUE
  • This term refers to ceramic ware that has been
    fired once without glaze.

13
Throwing

    potter's wheel.

14
Parts of the VaseFOOT
  • This is the part of the vase that meets the floor

15
Parts of the VaseMOUTH
  • The opening at the top of a vase

16
Stages of Dryness BONE DRY
  • Stage of dryness where the clay is ready to go
into the kiln to be fired for the first time.
There is not any moisture left in the clay.

17
Parts of the VaseBODY
  • This is the main part of the vase. It is usually
the largest part. We formed this part by making
two pinch pots and putting them together.

18
Glaze
  • A glass-like surface coating for ceramics that is
used to decorate and seal the pores of the fired
    clay.

19
Pinch
  • This is a method of shaping clay by inserting the
thumb of one hand into the clay and lightly
pinching with the thumb and fingers while slowly
rotating the ball in the palm of the other hand.

20
Wheel ThrowingConing
