Running Buddies
  • It was a cold December morning 527am to be
exact. The frost was still on the rooftop, car
windows on the street had the icy gloss on them,
and I could see the smoke come out of my mouth as
I exited the house for my warm-ups. It was
chilly, but I felt prepared Wind breaker,
jogging sweats, ear muffs, and gloves were all on
to keep me comfortable for this forty-five minute
    endeavor.
  • This was not the first time I had been morning
greeted by Jack Frost. My sister and I were
training for the San Francisco marathon. We had
been training since summer time. The elements
were not strangers to us. Being by the water, I
cant really ever complain about conditions being
too hot, but there were days this winter I would
have rather had a book and been cozied up by the
fireplace. (Seemingly, a better option than to
run several miles against the wind.)
  • With my sister, Gina, living just two streets
behind me, I have diligently picked her up since
the preparation for this marathon has begun. No
knocking or doorbell ringing is necessary. When
I make it to the bottom of her driveway, she
quickly comes off of her front porch and she
comes down the drive to jog with me.

  • Gina and I are thick as thieves. We are older
now, and really do appreciate each other. But I
can honestly say this was not always the case. I
remember when we were kids, BFF- best friends
forever, was not a termed phrase we would use to
describe our relationship. Sisters have to grow
into that closeness and we have.
  • We do not talk much while training. We just
keep our strides in time with one another. We
have gotten really good at letting the other know
when we need a break, or need to slow down, or
have a cramp in the side that we need to work
through. Funny, we communicate all these things
    without words.
  • There are several thoughts that come to mind
    when we are running
  • What werent we this close when we were younger?
  • What would my life be like without my sister?
  • What was I thinking when I said would run with
    her?
  • Crampcramp cramp! Just walk it off?
  • Cappuccino or frapuccino?
  • What kind of cream cheese am I craving right
    now. Honey and not!
  • None of it really matters just as long as I am
    with my sister!

5
  • As we wrap up the training, we always make our
way to Starbucks. That is the treat we reward
ourselves with after such discipline. That is
when we do all the sister conversations. Five
days out of the week we do the same thing. You
might think it is boring or laborious, but it is
not! It is something I look forward to every
    day.
  • I do not know what the end result will be with
the marathon Will I even place? It is really
not very important to me. I do know I am in the
best shape of my life by participating in this
training. I do know that my sister and I spend
more time together than we ever have. And I do
know that I wouldnt want to train with anyone
else! My sister is my running buddy in so many
ways. I am enjoying the monotony of being in
    stride with my sister!

Meet My Hero
  • Mothers seem to be unsung heroes! Not mine I
sing her praises all day long! As a mother now,
I just cant figure out how she kept the house
    spotless, kept us organized, remembered
everyones favorite foods, birthdays, like, and
dislikes and yet seemed so sane most of the
time. My world often feels turned upside down,
but I keep trying to fill the shoe of mother.
  • Yeah, I am now a mother and am probably not
nearly as gracious or graceful, but I will just
keep trying to carry everything and hold it all
together just as mother still seems to do!
