1
Victory Over Besetting Sin
Topic
  • Text Hebrews 121
  • Rev Ho Chee Lai

2
I. Run without Encumbrance
  • Our Christian living on earth is likened to
    running a race.

3
I. Run without Encumbrance
  • Weights Not necessary an evil but things which
    weigh us down.
  • - We need to be careful that our Christian
race is not choked with the things and cares of
this world. Apply Love not the world and be
not deceived by its riches (Mk. 419 1Jn.
    215).

4
I. Run without Encumbrance
  • Weights Not necessary an evil but things which
    weigh us down.
  • - Little weights can turn into heavy burdens
if we continue to carry them for a long time.
The fatal mistake of the believer is to seek to
bear lifes burden all by himself. Apply Cast
them unto Jesus He cares for you (Matt.
    1128 Ps. 5522 1Pet. 57).

5
I. Run without Encumbrance
  • Sins euperistatos (trans. which doth so easily
beset) well standing around a competitor
    thwarting another in every direction.
  • - Besetting sin subtle in its approach,
disguised in its character, and difficult to be
    identified.

6
I. Run without Encumbrance
  • Sins euperistatos (trans. which doth so easily
beset) well standing around a competitor
    thwarting another in every direction.
  • - Apply We fall in our race and backslide from
the Lord not because of major and cardinal sins
but little besetting sins in our lives (Song
    215).

7
II. Run with Endurance
  • The recipe to the successful completion
    patience
  • - hupomone endurance when pressed by
circumstances of trials and sufferings in life.
  • - agon (trans. race) conflict (2), fight
    (2), and contention (1).

8
II. Run with Endurance
  • Apply Our Christian race will take our whole
lifetime to complete, often grueling and
agonizing. Many started the race well but finish
poorly because of the lack of endurance (Jn.
    666 Matt. 2413).

9
III. Run with Encouragement
  • A great cloud of witnesses (ref. Heb. 1133-38)
  • - Not a call to COMPETITION but a call to
    COMPLETION.
  • - Not SPECTATORS OF our race but EXAMPLES FOR
    our race.
  • - They had completed their race an
    encouragement unto us.

10
III. Run with Encouragement
  • Jesus is our perfect example to emulate looking
    unto Jesus
  • Apply Turn your eyes away from the things of
the world and focus on Christ. Only Jesus can
help us to have victory over besetting sins and
    to finish the race.
