• Lived from May 24th 1819 January 22nd 1901
• June 20th 1837 began her reign as Queen of the
  United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland which
  would last 63 years, seven months the longest
  of any other British monarch to date
• She was the first monarch to reside at Buckingham
  Palace

• The time of Queen Victorias reign is known as
  the Victorian era and is renowned as a time of
  industrial, political, and military progress
  within the United Kingdom.
• Queen Victorias reign was marked by a great
  expansion of the British Empire as it became the
  foremost global power of the time.

Personal Life

• Queen Victoria was mostly of German descent
• She married her first cousin, Prince Albert of
  Sax-Coburg and Gotha with whom she had nine
  children As the monarch she had to propose to
  him and in 1840 they married

• She had nine children She arranged marriages
  for these nine children and also for her
  resulting forty-two grand children across Europe,
  in doing so earning herself the nickname, the
  grandmother of Europe.

Important People

• In Queen Victorias early reign the government
  was controlled by the Whig Party, which had been
  in power, except for brief intervals, since 1830.
  Therefore, the Whig Prime Minister, Lord
  Melbourne, became a powerful influence in the
  life of the politically inexperienced Queen, who
  relied on him for advice
• The extensiveness of Victorias family in some
  ways tied Europe together

• Victoria's principal adviser was her uncle King
  Leopold I of Belgium
• In early reign the Queen commissioned Sir Robert
  Peel, a Tory, to form a new ministry which
  resulted in the bedchamber crisis
• Queen Victorias husband to whom she was happily
  married played an important role in governing
  with her

Contributions

• Gradual establishment of modern constitutional
  monarchy
• The power of the House of Commons increased as
  the result of a series of legal reforms, at the
  expense of the House of Lords and the monarchy,
  with the monarch's role becoming gradually more
  symbolic.

• As the Victorian reign became more symbolic
  rather than political, further attention was
  given to values such as morality and family
  relationships rather than sexual, financial, and
  personal scandals that had previously been
  associated with members of the House of Hanover,
  discrediting it.
• Created for Britain the concept of family
  monarchy with which the middle classes could
  identify.
