3
INTRODUCTION TO MR NANOPARTICLES
  • PURPOSE OF USING NANOTECHNOLOGY IN A BRAKING
    SYSTEM
  • Magneto-Rheological MR fluid is a mixture of
magnetizable materials, such as iron nanospheres,
    in synthetic silicone base fluid
  • MR braking devices exists however none has ever
been tested with new experimental Nanoparticles

4
INTRODUCTION TO MR NANOPARTICLES
Once the MR fluid is magnetized the metal
particles will be aligned into fibrous structure
When the MR fluid between two surfaces moving in
opposite directions is magnetized it will create
a variable viscous friction force
5
INTRODUCTION TO MR NANOPARTICLES
  • Why Nanoparticles ?
  • High saturation magnetization
  • High relative permeabilities
  • Low coercivities
  • High resistivities
  • Low hysteresis loss

THOUGHTS CHALLENGES
Axle Brake
  • The fluid would be in direct contact with the
    copper coils
  • Assembly issues

20
FINAL ANALYSIS
THOUGHTS CHALLENGES
  • Diminished Flux Intensity. Flux Path too long
  • Weight due to assembling more parts
  • Higher Leaking Potential
