Title: Searching for Stellar Streams in the Solar Neighbourhood

1
Searching for Stellar Streams in the Solar
Neighbourhood
  • Rainer Klement (MPIA)
  • Hans-Walter Rix (MPIA), Burkhard Fuchs (ARI)

2
1. Introduction
  • Phase-space distribution of stars has structure
on small scales ? moving groups/ stellar streams
  • Young moving groups (stars remeber their
    birthplace)
  • Dynamical streams (e.g. bar resonance)
  • Tidal streams (signs of hierarchical Galaxy build
    up)
  • Basic idea stars in the same tidal stream have
    very similar Integrals of motion
    (E,L,LZ,e) f (x,v, F(x))
  • Large samples of stars with (a ,d ,d, vrad, µa,
    µd) needed RAVE, SDSS/SEGUE

3
2. Stream detection in RAVE data
  • Distribution in V vs. (U2 2V2)1/2

  • 1st application

  • RAVE DR1

  • 7015 stars

  • dlt500pc, sd/dlt0.25

4
2. Stream detection in RAVE data
  • Distribution in V vs. (U2 2V2)1/2

  • smooth velocity

  • distribution sub-

  • tracted

5
3. Stream detection in SDSS data
  • Distribution in V vs. (U2 2V2)1/2

  • SEGUE data

  • 8066 stars

  • dlt1kpc, sd/dlt0.25
