Barriers
  • It cant be done, Dunedin is too big!
  • I dont want you bullying my staff.
  • Whats the point they (we) can just wear a
    hoodie!
  • Are we now complicit with the morals of the
    industry?.
  • Itll cost a packet!

4
The Process 1
  • Participating in 3 monthly Community
accountability meeting with Dunedin Casino and
    DIA.
  • Casino vs Class 4 Venues
  • A lot of difficult telephone calls
  • Were all in this together
  • Well attended meeting
  • 2 articles in the ODT

5
The Process 2
  • Nominated co-ordinator(s).
  • Format a letter/form for disseminating
information and photograph by post to identified
    venues.
  • Just did it. In 3 months we supported 6 people to
    self exclude
  • Follow up phone calls to Societies and Venues,
    fewer difficult calls.

6
Relationships
  • Adaptation on our part from pot-shot mentality to
    collaboration.
  • Mutual problem identified
  • Listening to the problems the societies and
    venues were having with exclusion
  • Creatively finding solutions
  • Continual dialogue and follow up meeting

7
The Future
  • Simplifying the paperwork (fax/email)
  • Our involvement in training of class 4 venue
    staff. Changing attitudes.
  • Information cards
  • Re-entry conditions for Class 4 venues
