Title: US CMS SWC Review
1US CMS SWC Review
- The US CMS Research Program
- Dan Green
- US CMS Program Manager
- January 14, 2003
2Outline
- CMS Status
- US CMS Status
- Detector Endgame
- The US CMS Research Program
3CMS Status - Schedule
- The DAQ TDR is finished
- In planning for the Physics TDR the structure of
CMS has been altered (PRS Project) - Milestones have been rethought (V33) given the
revised schedule for the LHC first Physics run.
4CMS SC and MB
The CMS collaboration sets scientific direction
for the detectors, the software and the Physics.
The US physicists are well represented in the CMS
Steering Committee.
5US CMS Detector Status
Detector is on schedule and on budget.
Construction will end in FY05 ? handoff to
commissioning and MO before FY05.
6Detector Endgame
The US CMS deliverables will be 96 complete in
FY05 and finally installed in UX5 by FY07. The BA
has evolved to reflect this fact. In turn, the
softer profile allows us to fund the SWC
Project in a more timely way.
7Project Complete - RP
Commissioning starts in FY03 above ground
(access). In parallel DC prepare for the Physics
TDR and thence CSC deployment. Profit from the
LHC delay by preparing well for the physics.
8The US CMS Enterprise
- The US CMS Research Program is a unitary object.
Detector Device and FE (ME, HCAL)
Trig/pipeline L1 DAQ L2/L3
(HLT and PRS)
P5 For major upgrade e.g. tracker for 10x
luminosity
SWC UF and CAS, Tier 1, 2
MO VCR, PAC Detector calib/align
Upgrade RD Outreach
RP
9PAC and the DC
VCR ties to detector MO and later to CMS data
shifts. PAC ties to SWC DC and later to data
logging and analysis.
10SWC Tier 2 Deployment
5 10 20 LHC DC
Earlier deployment of Tier 2 for participation in
the DC would be very desirable.
11SWC Management
I believe it is time to --- treating software as
a deliverable --- bringing to bear the concepts
of modern project management. Bob
Eisenstein With limited resources we must be as
efficient and flexible as possible.
12RP - Reporting
In response to requests by the funding agencies,
US CMS will report quarterly on the RP. Reports
include schedule ML tracking, planning annual
BCWS, and performance actual cost invoices,
ACWP. Use of the annual management reserve will
also be reported.
13RP MO SWC Upgrades
- The MO effort has been scrubbed
- Engineering consolidated (memory loss)
- PO extended for detector (contingency loss)
- Management reserve reduced (agility)
- Delay VCR, PAC (US Physics risk)
- The Upgrade effort has been delayed (put US CMS
leadership in a L upgrade at risk ?) - The PO have been consolidated
- The detector funding profile has been softened
and ends in FY05/FY08. - The agencies have given us the ability to move
funds around Detector, MO, SWC so as to
maximize the use of the support (e.g. loans in
FY01 and FY03 to SWC). -
14Scrubbed MO
Added Tier-2 support in Physics Analysis Centers.
This addition is required for US leadership
beyond contributing to shared resources of CMS.
A faster PAC ramp up to match the DC would be
very useful.
15MO and Resources
Note the rolloff of construction to MO by FY05.
Scrubbing has reduced the personnel costs.
BaBar reality check
16Research Program - BA
- Note that a 0.5 M loan was needed in FY01 for
the RP. - Given the guidance and the NSF schedule, a second
loan of 1.4 M is likely needed in FY03 simply
to support a scrubbed, bare bones effort. - Clearly, a Project that requires a loan each year
is not viable (AMTRACK?). - These loans must be paid back (in FY04-FY05) as
the cap on detector funds requires complete
tracking.
17Research Program - BA
The scrubbed MO and bare bones SWC appears to
fit within guidance (upper limit?). This level
of support does not maintain leadership for US
physicists in excess of shared RP resources.
Note the FY09 mismatch due to increased common
(Cat A) costs of CMS.
18Contingency in the BA
- US CMS and NSF have attempted to improve the
funding profile by - Submitting a proposal to NSF for the RP which
exceeds the current guidance. - Submitting a joint LHC major ITR
- Submitting a medium ITR on collaboratory tools
- If there is a major funding shortfall in FY03 we
will have to fire existing staff. This is
draconian for an effort this must ramp up if the
LHC Physics program is to succeed and if the US
physicists are to maintain a leading position in
CMS.
19US CMS and the RP
US CMS is committed to the ramp up to first
Physics. It appears we can expect a factor 2 in
growth. In addition to redirection, new groups
will join. We must allow for this growth of the
collaboration in our planning. Present guidance
does not allow for this growth.
20Summary
- US CMS has built a successful detector
construction project. - The endgame plan allows a faster ramp up of the
SWC and MO Projects which define the RP. - Both Projects should be the subject of MOU where
US CMS, in consultation with CMS, specifies a set
of well defined deliverables. - Beyond the deliverables, US leadership demands
resources specific to US physicists to enable
their research.
