Types of charts and their application
  • Avoid using the wrong kind of chart!
  • Line chart shows values over timemonthly sales,
    or patients temperature
  • Bar chart compares values of different
    kindWheat production vs. Corn Production
    orCanadian wheat production vs. US

  • Pie chart shows parts of a whole
  • Scatter plot to show two variables at
    onceheight and weight of entering freshmen
  • Bubble plot to contrast multiple variables from
    multiple observationsProduction capability,
    market share, and profitability for each product

Creating simple charts
  • Select the values, and click on charts
  • Step through the prompts, adding titles, etc.
  • Create chart on the worksheet, or on a sheet of
    its own
  • Include explanatory column and row headings
  • Position and size the chart (if on the sheet)

Legends Other Features
  • If you dont really need Legend, delete it
    otherwise, position it out of the way
  • Modify Title or other features
  • Highlight certain features, and retype

Modifying gridlines major axes
  • Right-click on gridlines of finished chart
  • Modify scale, weight, color
  • X crosses at maximum (turns the chart upside
    down bars, for instance, hang down from above.)

Charting part, but not all, of a sheet
  • Select some row(s)
  • Holding down CTRL, select titles, or other rows
  • With multiple selections highlighted, click the
    chart icon OR
  • Right-click on the existing chart, and add more
    rows in Source Data

Exercise 2 (MS Excel)
  • Create a payment and amortization schedule for a
    2,000 loan, at 14.75, paid quarterly (at end of
    Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec) over two years.
  • Then chart the declining balance on the same
    sheet.
  • Title the chart Loan Schedule (Your Name)and
    print it to turn in

To be done in class but youre welcome to
practice before class.
