SHORELINE SURVEY
- Photo Sciences Goals to Completion for the
CHNEP Shoreline Survey Project. - Capture an accurate Shoreline for the extent of
the project area. - Attribute the Shoreline using Photo
Interpretation Techniques. - Conduct QA/QC on the PI and revise.
- Digitally capture the Volunteer Data.
- Connect the Volunteer Data to the parcel base
inside of the GIS thereby giving the Volunteer
Data a Spatial Identity. - Conduct a final QA/QC on the project.
- Deliver product to CHNEP.

SHORELINE SURVEY
- Creating a query to select the PI shoreline
classes within a particular parcel. - Step 1 Select the parcel you wish to evaluate.
- Step 2 Select from the shoreline data the
shoreline segments that are within 90. The
reason we have to use a distance at this point is
because the shorelines are not necessarily
reflective of the waterside extent of the
parcels. - Step 3 Display the results.

SHORELINE SURVEY
3 Questions posed by Jaime Boswell former
Volunteer Coordinator for CHNEP
- Question Number 1 How many parcels in Charlotte
County have Trimmed Mangroves? - Question Number 2 Where are the Mangrove
Shorelines located that were Damaged? - Question Number 3 How many miles of shoreline in
Pine Island Sound have been Hardened?
26CHARLOTTE HARBOR NATIONAL ESTUARY PROGRAM
SHORELINE SURVEY
Question 1 How many parcels in Charlotte County
have Trimmed Mangroves?
- Solution
- Use the volunteer sheets to answer this question,
the PI was not tasked to determine whether
mangroves were trimmed. The PI did determine in
some instances that the mangroves may be trimmed
and noted that in the comment field, but this was
not field verified. - Select all of the parcels in Charlotte County
that have a Yes in the Mangroved_Trim field in
the database. - Display the amount of records that answer the
question. - Of the provided 2,593 Charlotte County Parcels,
294 or Approximately 11 have Trimmed Mangroves
as identified by the Volunteers.

SHORELINE SURVEY
- QA/QC Plan
- Scheda Ecological Associates performed an
Accuracy Assessment where they categorized 500
randomly selected segments and then compared
their results with ours. (There are 10,000 PI
segments for the project area) - Scheda then captured 50 locations to field check
to produce a final Photo Interpretation Key these
locations were also used to validate their
randomly selected segments and our final draft
shoreline deliverable. - PhotoScience then used the 500 segment
designations to verify our PI interpretations of
signatures. Out of the 500 segments Scheda would
have interpreted 8.2 with a slight variation to
our PI. These slight variations took the form of
adding another exotic to create a more mixed
category to changing the damaged designation.
Scheda disagreed with our interpretation approx.
5 of the time with most of their changes coming
in the form of a change from a mangrove to one of
the exotic types or a mix. - PhotoScience worked with the Scheda interpreters
actively discussing the interpretations to
resolve each of the differing elements. A
revised shoreline classification was produced at
the end of the process.
