Project Management
  • February 19, 2002
  • Dr. Richard Chung
  • Dept. Chemical Materials Engineering
  • San Jose State University

2
What Is Project Management?
  • Effective project management is the planning,
    scheduling, directing, and controlling available
resources for a relatively short-term work which
is established for the purpose of meeting
    specific goals and objectives.

3
Objectives of Project Management
  • To finish your research/design project within the
    specified time period (on schedule)
  • To meet your research/design objectives within
allocated cost or assigned resources efficiently
    and effectively (within budget)
  • To accomplish your project with expected quality
    and desired performance (desired
    performance/technology level)

4
Reasons Why Projects Fail
  • Poorly defined objectives and requirements
  • Lack of necessary resources
  • Ineffective and insufficient project planning
  • Lack of focus and support
  • Poor skills of implementation
  • Little or no risk analysis
  • Inadequate scheduling and time management
  • Poor monitoring and evaluation
  • Ineffective control process
  • Inflexible change plan no alternatives

5
Tools Needed for Project Management
  • Communications oral and written
  • Static models Gantt charts (bar charts)
  • Dynamic models flow charts, network logic
diagram, critical path method (CPM), PERT
    (Program Evaluation and Review Technique),
    PERT/TIME, PERT/COST
  • Computer software MS Project 2000

6
Important Resources for Your Project
  • Money
  • Time
  • Manpower
  • Materials
  • Equipment
  • Facilities
  • Technology

7
Start with Single Activities
  • Three control parameters cost, time and quality
  • Use Gantt charts to exhibit an experiment
progress or to list a specific activity required
    to accomplish an objective
  • Gantt charts do not show the results of an early
    or late start in activities
  • Convert Gantt charts to partial interrelationship
    charts for future activities

8
Software Features
  • Planning, tracking, and monitoring
  • CPM, PERT, network reports
  • Project calendar
  • Time estimation with completion dates
  • Risk analysis (What-if)
  • Multi-task analysis and control
  • Cost control
