2Anyone can get the flu it can be more serious for
people aged 65 yrs or over and people who are
younger (including children and young people aged
over 6 months of age) with conditions such as
Asthma. You may also be at an increased risk if
you have diabetes that you have to use medication
for, or you have you have a serious kidney or
liver disease, or if you have lowered immunity
due to disease or treatment.
3Even if you are young, feel fit and healthy, if
you fall into one of these groups you are more at
risk from the effects of flu. You should get your
flu jab in the Autumn, September/October. The
flu vaccine is not a live virus, it makes your
body produce antibodies to protect you and takes
about 7 to 10 days to work. When shouldnt you
have the vaccine if you have a serious allergy
to hens eggs or if you have had an allergic
reaction to the flu vaccine in the past. If you
are not sure ask your doctor.
4- What is Influenza?
- Viral infection of the respiratory tract (wind
pipe and lungs) - Affects all age groups
- Symptoms fever, chills, headache, affects the
nervous system, and sometimes extreme exhaustion,
dry cough and sore throat - More severe than a cold
- Recovery 2-7 days
- Can be serious, complications such as Pneumonia
of which there is a high of death. In the
elderly it will cause a strain on all the other
organs such as Heart.
5- Influenza Vaccine
- Provides 70 -80 protection against the flu
- The Flu vaccine is not a live vaccine and
therefore will not cause the Flu . - Has a proven track safety record
- also
- In England, 13 million vaccines are used but this
is still a shortfall of 40 of the target group
of over 65s - There are 54 GP practices in Sunderland .the
government target for over 65s was 70
