Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. - As a young boy, he enjoyed drawing things as he
saw in his mind, not as they were in real life.

- Began his career creating ads for Flit, a
division of Standard Oil - Used his middle name as writing name, putting Dr.
in front of it, as his father always wanted him
to be a doctor.

- Was rejected by 29 publishers before it was
accepted - Was Dr. Seusss first book published
- Published in 1937

- John Hershey, author of article criticizing the
Dick and Jane books as being boring, challenged
Dr. Seuss to write a book using a list of 223
Dolch reading words.
