Promote Independent Learning

• You should act in ways which promote and respect
  tutees independence
• You should assist tutees to be better able to
  help themselves thus empowering them with
  confidence and self reliance to tackle new tasks

Personalize Instruction

• You should pace activities to suit the tutee,
  drawing on his/her experiences and ideas
• Connecting what s/he are learning to what they
  already know you enable the tutee to learn the
  material more readily and retain it for a longer
  period of time

Facilitate Insight

• You should work with the tutee in such a way that
  s/he discovers answers
• You should establish an environment in which the
  tutee can do good work by removing obstacles and
  offering additional resources or tools to assist
  him/her

• For example a tutee tells you s/he does not know
  how to solve a particular problem. If your
  response is Here let me show you, then you have
  not facilitated the tutees work. However if you
  say Well, how do you start?, then you have
  facilitated her/his work. The power to do the
  work is in the tutees hand while you discover
  what obstacles are in the way.

Provide a student perspective

• From recent personal experiences you can provide
  insight to the tutee about how to be a successful
  student in the class for which s/he is seeking
  help

Respect Individual Differences

• You will be working with students whose
  backgrounds are in some ways very different from
  yours, and maintaining respect may be most
  difficult when the tutoring session is not going
  well. Focus on what your tutoring is not doing
  rather than placing blame on the tutee. Find
  ways to change your approach. Seek advice from
  your supervisor or another tutor. But ultimately
  you are not responsible for whether a student
  succeeds, that is their responsibility.

Know Campus Resources

• Your job is to assist students through homework
  support, development of effective study
  strategies, and review of material the student
  may not have fully comprehended during lecture.
  If a tutee approaches you with a problem outside
  of your job description refer them to the
  appropriate campus resource for help.
