2
Overview
  • EM as a UF elective rotation (prior to 2001)
  • GV sees mostly UF students who want exposure to
    ED (? students/year)
  • Jax sees mostly non-UF students interested in
    applying for EM residency (35 40 students/year)

3
Overview
  • EM student oversight prior to 2001
  • GV EM attendings
  • Jax EM residency structure is PGY 2-4 until
2000, so most oversight is EM attendings and
    4th-year residents.

4
Overview
  • EM as a required 4th year clerkship 2001
  • Significant increase in number and makeup of
students (approx. 40/year to gt 100)
  • Significant increase in utilization of Jax ED
  • EM residency at Jax has changed program format
    (now PGY 1-3)
  • Attending staffs at both institutions are
increasing in size, but not at pace of student
    numbers

5
Unique rotation structure
  • Shifts
  • Templated schedule to allow increased number of
    students
  • Not paired with a single attending
  • Increased reliance on shift evaluations from both
attendings and PGY 2 and 3 residents
  • Weekly didactic meetings

6
Potential Rotation Difficulties
  • Relative anonymity of students
  • Varied attending schedules, especially
    residency/student administrators
  • Templated student schedule
  • Dichotomous class interests
  • Continued need to mentor, appraise, and write
LORs for students interested in EM
  • Loss of ability to give a detailed analysis of EM
    students abilities

7
What to do?
  • Separate rotation for EM-interested?
  • Maintain current experience for non-EM track
  • Add-on to this to create a career-oriented
    experience
  • Separate, but parallel track

8
What to do?
  • Separate rotation for EM-interested?
  • Mirror PGY-1 schedule
  • Increase academic requirements
  • Increase clinical workload
  • Enable mentoring of EM-interested students
  • Increased ability to write detailed LORs for
    other EM programs
