Deuteronomy
  • The word deuteronomy (second law copy of the
    law) is a mistranslation of Deut. 1718, but does
    indicate that Moses retells the law in the book.
  • Consists largely of a series of addresses by
    Moses on the plains of Moab before Israel entered
    the promised Land.

The Structure of Deuteronomy
  • Treaty. M. Kline suggests that the book follow
    the form of an ancient Near Eastern treaty

The renewal of the covenant
  • Heaven and earth serve as witnesses to the
    covenant. (Deut. 426 3019 3128)
  • Deuteronomy is in effect the constitution of
    Israel, containing both the covenant, and law
    code.
  • The preamble is Deut. 6. This is known as the
    shema. Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the
    Lord is one.

  • Moses gives three addresses, which highlight the
    following themes
  • Israel has been here before. Dont act as your
    fathers did. (first address)
  • Life in the kingdom of God under the rule of God.
    (second address)
  • Future blessing depends upon covenant renewal
    (third address)
