Lets Travel Round The World!
  • A Lesson for 2nd and 3rd Grade
  • Geography
  • Designed by
  • Steve W. Rosenswrosen_at_oakland.edu
  •

2
Introduction
  • The world around us is made up of many different
countries, cultures and people. You are going to
take a tour of the globe and pick a country that
you find different and interesting compared to
    our own.
  • You will study the culture, language, music, art
and cuisine of your chosen country and will
present this information to your classmates in
the form of a skit or short play. Part of your
presentation may also show the typical climate
    and geography of the area.

3
Task
  • Your presentation should include at least the
    following information
  • 1) The style of clothing that is popular in your
    chosen country.
  • 2) A sample of the language that is spoken in
    your country.
  • 3) A discussion of the style or culture of
    living in your country.
  • 4) A representation of the countrys popular
    music.
  • 5) Samples of the countrys art or style of
    artwork.
  • 6) A description of the countrys cuisine.
(Samples for the class to taste earn extra
    credit!)
  • 7) You should also develop a portion of your
skit or play that shows the audience what type of
geography and climate conditions are typical in
the region of the world you have chosen.

4
Process 1
  • You will need to be in groups of 5 students for
    each chosen country project.
  • Prior to beginning your exploration of the
chosen country, your teacher will approve the
    location chosen.
  • Each student in the group will be assigned one or
two topics to research for the presentation.

5
Process 2
  • You will use the following resources to research
    your part of the presentation
  • World Atlas located in school library or resource
    room
  • Various library geography books (Resource room
aid will help locate books on your country)
  • Internet websites (Classroom teacher will assist
you in locating websites for your country)
  • The following links may also be useful in your
    search
  • UNITED NATIONS CYBER SCHOOLBUS
  • WORLD SITES ATLAS
  • Library of Congress / PORTALS TO THE WORLD

6
Process 3
  • Once you have the properly researched
information, you will need to begin the process
to put your presentation together. This process
    may include the following ideas
  • Design and make clothing that is specific to your
    countrys culture.
  • Make food or treats that are part of your native
countrys diet (with a parents help if
    necessary).
  • A photo or drawing of your country showing the
type of geographical areas, such as mountains,
rivers, valleys, lakes, volcanoes, forests, etc
  • A display of artwork of some type typical to your
    country.
  • A chart showing the type and amount of
precipitation that occurs in the region.
  • Put together a short skit or play demonstrating
the language and music that is typical in your
    country.

7
Evaluation
  • Each group will be graded on a 10 point scale
    based on the following
  • Clothing style and originality 2 points
  • Language demonstration ------ 1 point
  • Music presentation --------------1 point
  • Art presentation ----------------2 points
  • Food demonstration -------1 point (plus up to 2
    extra credit points)
  • Geography work, including map and climate work
    3 points
  • As you can see, it is possible to receive as many
as 12 total points with extra credit work, so
each group has the opportunity to do well on this
    project.

8
Conclusion
  • Well, hopefully we have learned a great deal
about many countries while researching your
country, presenting your projects and watching
your fellow students do their presentations. You
now should know not only a great deal about other
parts of the world and different cultures, but be
able to compare them to our own countrys culture
and geography to better understand the world we
    live in.

Credits
  • Many thanks go to my IST 396 instruction for
teaching me how to design and plan a multimedia
    lesson plan.

10
Introduction (Teacher)
  • This lesson was developed as part of my
elementary education IST 396 module for the
    winter 2006 semester.
  • It is intended as a second and third grade
geography lesson that should last for three or
four class periods including the short
presentations given by 5 or 6 groups of students
    (5 in a group).

11
Learners (Teacher)
  • This lesson should give second and third graders
an overall knowledge of other countries and the
way people live, and under what climates and
geographical conditions. It is not intended to be
an in depth research project, but rather a chance
for the students to understand some parts of the
research process while having fun also by
presenting their information in a stage setting.
  • It is expected that the students will need some
guidance in doing the library research and also
the internet research areas of the project. Some
parental supervision may also be necessary at
home while the children are involved in the
clothing and food preparation parts of the
    project.

12
Standards (Teacher)
  • This lesson should help the students understand
some of the physical criteria used to classify
geographical regions by climate and geographical
    makeup.
  • The student should also learn about the
components of culture, such as language, customs
    (art and music) and food.
  • There are many other benchmarks that can be
achieved in this lesson, but only if it were
developed in more detail for upper grades with
    more expectations.

13
Process 1 (Teacher)
  • You will need students to be in groups of 4 or 5
students for each chosen country project
    depending on the class size.
  • Prior to beginning the students exploration
of their chosen countries, you should approve the
    location chosen.
  • Each student in the group will be assigned one or
two topics to research for the presentation.
  • It may be helpful, based on the grade level if
you give the students a small group of already
    selected countries to chose from.
  • It would also be suggested, especially in the
younger grades(to avoid any conflicts), that you
provide assistance in delegating the assigned
topics of research in each group.

14
Process 2 (Teacher)
  • Each student should be instructed to research
    using the following resources
  • World Atlas located in school library or resource
    room
  • Various library geography books (Resource room
aid should be willing to help locate books on
    their chosen country)
  • Internet websites (You should be able to assist
the student in their website searches.)
  • The following links may also be useful in each
    students search
  • UNITED NATIONS CYBER SCHOOLBUS
  • WORLD SITES ATLAS
  • Library of Congress / PORTALS TO THE WORLD

15
Process 3 (Teacher)
  • Once the student has properly researched their
information, they will need to begin the process
to put their presentation together. This process
    may include the following ideas
  • Design and make clothing that is specific to
    their countrys culture.
  • Make food or treats that are part of their native
countrys diet (with a parents help if
    necessary).
  • A photo or drawing of their country showing the
type of geographical areas, such as mountains,
rivers, valleys, lakes, volcanoes, forests, etc
  • A display of artwork of some type typical to
    their country.
  • A chart showing the type and amount of
precipitation that occurs in the region.
  • They should then put together a short skit or
play demonstrating the language and music that is
    typical in their country.

16
Resources (Teacher)
  • You will need the following resources to
    implement this lesson successfully
  • World Atlas or Globe
  • Available library or media room with geography
    materials
  • Internet access with available printer
  • Scrap fabric and materials for students to design
clothing (It is possible the art teacher may help
    students in this area)
  • Poster board and colored markers for their map
presentations (If it is age appropriate and the
materials are available, they may be allowed to
    do this on overhead transparencies)

17
Evaluation (Teacher)
  • Each group should be graded on a 10 point scale
    based on the following
  • Clothing style and originality 2 points
  • Language demonstration ------ 1 point
  • Music presentation --------------1 point
  • Art presentation ----------------2 points
  • Food demonstration -------1 point (plus up to 2
    extra credit points)
  • Geography work, including map and climate work
    3 points
  • As you can see, it is possible for students to
receive as many as 12 total points with extra
credit work, so each group has the opportunity
top do well on this project. This is not only
intended to be a research project, but the idea
is to show the students that school work can be a
    fun task.

18
Conclusions (Teacher)
  • Well, hopefully your students have learned a
great deal about many countries while researching
their country, presenting their projects and
watching their fellow students do their
presentations. They should now know not only a
great deal about other parts of the world and
different cultures, but be able to compare them
to our own countrys culture and geography to
better understand the world we they in.
