Title: Midsemester Term Paper

1
Mid-semester Term Paper
  • TMR4115
  • Friday, Oct 2 2003
  • Prof. Stein Ove Erikstad

2
Two main purposes
  • It will give a basis for evaluating your skills
and knowledge in applying the methods and tools
learnt in the course to practical design problems
  • It will give you the opportunity to synthesize
what you have learnt so far, and obtain training,
understanding and reflection with respect to the
usage and applicability of optimization methods
    and design theory

It is equally important to state, delimit and
model the problem, as to actually solve it
3
Tasks and phases
  • Problem statement, background, requirements,
    assumptions, simplifications
  • Selection decision model
  • Conceptual solutions generation, analysis and
    selection using the decision model
  • Design model formulation, pre-solution analysis,
    possible simplifications and sub-problem
    selection
  • Model solution strategies, discussion
  • Model exploration, solving
  • Post-solution analysis
  • Conclusions and summary

NB Subjects covered in all classes in October
is also relevant
4
Report writing
  • Summary
  • short to the point
  • focus on results!
  • Preface
  • the report context (course, when, thanks to...,
    special circumstances, etc.
  • Table of Contents
  • auto-generated, short, informative chapter names
  • Introduction
  • introducing the problem
  • Main body
  • Reference list
  • follow the standard
  • Appendices
  • should not be required reading to understand the
    report
  • Use Active form, and I/We

5
Selecting the design solution
Problem statement
6
  • Oct 5 Deliver a brief problem statement by email
  • Oct 6 - 30 Counseling, both regularly and on
    demand
  • Oct 31 Deliver the final report
  • Nov 6 Presentations in class

If you have a good reason, you may deliver by Nov
5. Send an email

How to ace an A ... ?
  • Show insight, understanding and reflection
through a clear line of thought and a unified
chain of reasoning steps. Avoid being verbose and
    focused on size.
  • Define your problem and its context clearly and
    completely, primarily by making necessary
assumptions. Avoid spending 50 of the time in
    the library searching for information.
  • Define a problem that is not so simple that it
provides only obvious answers, nor so difficult
that you are unable to provide the reader with
any valuable insight. You will be evaluated on
    the product of ambitions performance
  • Remember this is a design methods course. Pay
more attention to methods application than
    practical content
  • Pay attention to lay-out, structure, typos,
language - make it an excellent piece of work.

8
Problems
  • Passenger traffic
  • Areas Baltic, Adriatic, Oslofjorden
  • Concepts High speed vessels (many types),
    traditional ferries,
  • Offshore
  • exploration drilling (semisubs, drilling vessels,
    etc.)
  • production (GBS, semi, FPSO, )
  • sub-sea
  • Barges, work platforms (simple geometry)
  • Cargo transport
  • Snøhvit various concepts
  • Machinery concepts for a given vessel
  • Diesel vs. gas, diesel vs. diesel-electric

9
Optimization problems
