  • A person who figures in the action of a literary
    work.

  • Often the main character
  • A central figure in a literary work

  • A character pitted against the protagonist

Flat Character
  • One who exhibits a single dominant quality or
    character trait.
  • We only see one side of the character

Round Character
  • One who exhibits the complexity of traits
    associated with actual human beings.
  • We see all sides of the character - happy, sad,
    mad, pleasant, etc.

Static Character
  • A character that does not change throughout the
    whole story
  • Personality and behaviors are the same throughout
    the story

Dynamic Character
  • The character makes some kind of change within
    the story.
  • Example Ebenezer Scrooge - he is mean and
    hateful at the beginning of A Christmas Carol,
    but at the end he is kind and giving. He made
    some kind of change.
