Step 1 What have you got?
Structural design reading list Atkinson, M.F.
(1993) Structural foundations manual for low rise
buildings. Spon. Pilvang, C. Environmental

Built Environment. John Wiley Sons, 2000, p.

A book - look for author(s), title, publisher and
date of publication.
A book chapter or paper - look out for the word
In The author(s) and title of the chapter/paper
will precede the editors, title, publisher and
year of publication of the book. Page numbers
might also be given.
An article - this is a paper published in a
periodical (also called journals). These are
published regularly in issues - each issue is
part of a volume. Look out for the title of the
periodical, a volume number, and page numbers.
Step 2 Search Unicorn
- Searching for a book
- Type in the authors last name only, followed by
and - Then type in one or two words from the title
- Searching for a chapter
- Make sure you search for the editor and
title of the book not the author and title of
the chapter
- Searching for a periodical article
- Go to the search
- Type in the title of the periodical - not the
author and title of the article
Step 3 Find it in the Library
- Write down the whole Call Number as on
- Unicorn - in this example Folio 624.15 ATK
- Check which Library site it is held at - in
this example there is one copy in the Main
Library - Check that there are copies available - in
this example is one copy On the shelf which
has a standard loan period - (three week loan).
- Consult the Call Number guides and plans in
the Library to find out where it is located
