2General Education Classroom
- The purpose of the general education classroom is
to teach the curriculum to students without
disabilities. If a student with a disability is
placed in this setting, the only support the
student would be served is by the general
education teacher.
3General Education Classroom with Consultant
The student remains in the general education
classroom. The special education teacher works
with the general education teacher outside the
classroom to implement strategies or
modifications to the curriculum for the student
with disabilities.
4General Education Classroom with Itinerant
Teacher
The itinerant teacher is a special education
teacher who travels from school to school to
serve a variety of needs to students with
disabilities. The itinerant teacher gives
advice, resources and support to the student,
teacher, and parent. The majority of itinerant
teachers serve students with vision or hearing
disabilities.
5General Education Classroom with Resource Room
Support
The special education teacher may work directly
with the student with disabilities in the general
education setting. The special education teacher
may indirectly work with the general education
teacher to adapt or modify instructional
techniques for the students with disabilities.
6Part Time Resource Room
Students with disabilities attend a general
education classroom but are pulled out to receive
one on one or group instructional support. The
student with disabilities may be pulled out
several hours per day or for block of time every
week.
7Self Contained Class
Students with disabilities receive instructional
support in the special education classroom.
These students have significant behavior problems
or require intensive support. The student with
disabilities may participate in the general
education classroom in related arts or other
school activities. A paraprofessional may
accompany the student in this setting.
8Special Day School
Students with disabilities who have moderate to
severe cognitive and physical disabilities or
serious emotional disabilities attend a special
day school. High levels of specialized services
are served. To interact with students without
disabilities, a learning buddy may be brought to
the special day school.
9Residental Home
Students who have severe emotional, cognitive,
sensory or physical disabilities attend a
residential school that provides housing options.
Incarcerated adults in the juvenile justice
system between 18 and 21 years old are also
placed in a residential school.
10Home or Hospital
Students who are medically fragile, had surgery,
emotional crisis, or other medical treatments
receive instructional support at home or the
hospital.
The itinerant teacher travels to the hospital and
can also travel to the students home for a
specific time each week.
