  • Use FTP
  • File Transfer Protocol
  • Transfer files between your computer and a remote
    computer (usually a server)
  • via Dreamweaver, or
  • Stand-alone FTP application (MAC-Fetch, PC-WSftp)
  • available from http//www.download.com

  • In order to publish your web site, you will need
    to know
  • Name of your web server (host) - usually supplied
    by your web hosting company
  • Login name or user ID - usually supplied by you
    or your client
  • Password - again, supplied by you or the client
  • Directory - this is up to the web hosting company
    (sometimes it will be your login name or it may
    be left blank)

Domain Name
  • Domain name is part of the URL (Uniform Resource
    Locator)
  • Go to Internic.net to see if domain name is
    available (accredited)
  • Can be .com, .net, .biz, .org
  • Register domain name for your site
  • Sometimes registration can be done through web
    host
  • Usually 2-year upfront charge

Publishing
  • You can publish your web site on your computer
    (essentially your computer is a stand-alone
    server)
  • This is referred to as viewing the site locally
  • Use as many browsers as you have on your computer
    to check cross-compatibility issues
  • You can publish your web site to another computer
    through a web hosting company
  • This is referred to as publishing your site to
    the web
  • There are many web hosts with many different
    plans
  • Ranges in cost from roughly 50/year for basic
    plans to several hundred per year for advanced
    plans
  • Some advanced features include, use of scripting
    tools, such as CGI, ASP and SQL for building
    dynamic sites and adding shopping cart features.

  • Some ISPs offer limited web hosting space with
    your service
  • Disadvantages - do not have your own URL (you use
    the ISP as the link)

  • Have your own URL (must register domain name)
  • Various web hosting plans to choose from

Viewing Files on Server
  • Open browser window
  • Type URL in address field
  • Address any issues with your web site that
  • is not working (QA)
  • Fix issues and reload web site to remote server
  • Modified files will be overwritten
  • If only the HTML code has changed,
  • you do not have to re-upload your images
    everytime
