statement
It is the policy of the University to ensure the
health and safety of all its staff and students
at work in a reasonable and practicable manner.
Such duty of care is extended to cover those
people using the University premises. Our safety
standard would not be set only up to statutory
requirements which were merely a set of minimum
standards but also aim at international safety
standards. All our staff must act positively to
enhance further the health and safety aspects of
ones own operations. Please check with your
supervisor on details of your departmental
health and safety policy.

- Provide safety induction to a new comer like you
is our general practice. - An old hand of the department, most likely is
your supervisor, would conduct the induction for
you and this power point presentation is to
supplement the induction with visual aid
materials. - Ask question if you are in doubt!!!

5Your health and safety responsibilities
- to be actively involved in implementing the
Health and Safety Policies - to take reasonable care at work (or in the course
of study) for their own health and safety and all
others who may be affected by their acts or
omissions - not to interfere with or misuse, intentionally or
recklessly, anything provided in the interests of
health and safety and - to report problems relating to health and safety
matters.

safety officer (DHSO)
Find out who is your DHSO whom is the
co-ordinator of departmental HS matters. You may
have to contact this important person from time
to time.
7You may contact your DHSO for more information if

You can ask your DHSO about the nearest first aid
box. Of course, you can tour your office,
workshop or laboratory to familiar with its
location.

Sound the fire alarm by activating the
break-glass fire alarm call point switch in case
of fire.
Familiar yourself with the location of hose reel
and the break-glass alarm.

Check with your supervisor on which PPE do you
need at work?
- Your departmental health and safety officer
(DHSO), or Laboratory/workshop in-charge is the
one to arrange provision of PPE for you. - PPE is now a central program. The department can
obtain PPE from HSO. - For any enquiry, please feel free to contact HSO
at ext. 5999
15Maintenance and inspection of PPE
- Inspect your PPE before and after each use
- Take care of PPE at all times
- Clean your PPE after each use
- Inform your supervisor on damaged or broken PPE
and seek for replacement or repair - Store PPE in clean, dry area - free from exposure
to sunlight or contaminants

- Fire
- Any accident/injury
- Leakage/spillage of chemical
- Any other incidents that life or property is
endangered
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IN CASE OF EMERGENCY ?

- Your name and department
- Your contact telephone number
- Nature of incident with brief description
- Full detail of location of accident
- Any person(s) injured in the incident
20After an incident, report the case to your
supervisor or the staff responsible for the area
so that they could report the case to HSO by
filling a Accident/Incident Report Form(HSO Form
2) and send it to Health Safety Office through
the Department Head within 72 hours

21In the event of an injury which resulted in sick
leave or disability of you, the case should be
reported to the Department so that the Head could
complete a PO Form67 and forward to PO with a
copy to HSO immediately for Employee Compensation
recording and further investigation.

23After this general safety induction, your
supervisor should told you the departmental
safety arrangements and specific operational
health and safety issues. Please sign the new
employee safety checklist which should be counter
signed by your supervisor. The document will be
forwarded to HSO for verification and then kept
by PO in your personal file.
