Title: Title: Candle Lab

1
Title Candle Lab
  • A Practice in Observations

2
Candle Lab
  • Purpose To practice observational skills and
    writing observations.
  • Hypothesis If a lit candle (that is surrounded
by water) is related to the gases in the
atmosphere, then when the candle is covered by an
e-flask I think _(fill in what you think will
    happen)__ will happen because______________.

3
Candle Lab
  • Materials See drawn diagram on white board.
  • Procedure
  • Put on goggles
  • Light candle and drop some wax into dish to help
    support the candle.
  • Blow out candle and set into soft wax.
  • Carefully fill water dish approximately half way
    with water.
  • Re-light candle and observe for about 30 seconds.
  • Using the e-flask cover the candle and continue
    to observe.

4
Data Observations
  • Create a T-chart that has two columns, one for
    Quantitative Observations one column for
    Qualitative Observations
  • Come up with a of minimum 20 clear observations
from this lab activity! (20 MINIMUM!)
  • Remember observations are statements of FACTS
    (No inferences!)

5
Analysis Questions(write out the questions and
the answers)
  • Was there anything that happened that you did not
    expect?
  • Why did the flame go out?
  • Three things are needed for the candle to burn.
    What are those three things?
  • What happened to the gas inside the e-flask?
  • Why did the water level inside the flask change?

6
CONCLUSION
  • Write a conclusion in paragraph form that
    addresses these three items
  • Refer back to your predicted hypothesis and state
whether your hypothesis was fully supported, not
supported or partially supported BASED ON YOUR
    OBSERVATIONS!
  • Summarize in a sentence or two what relationship
exists between the gases in the atmosphere (in
the room) and a flaming/burning candle.
  • Explain why there was a change in the candle,
water, flame system when the candle was sealed
off from the atmosphere (the room).
