- Single point of contact (SPOC) person for
Dictionary Project - Coordinates all dictionary ordering
- Is contact for the school districts
- Coordinates receiving and storage
- Manages PR with the local media and Verizon PR

- Identify School District Contact
- Contact School district office and request an
individual to be a liaison for the district - Call or meet the district liaison and offer the
dictionary project to the district. Give an
overview of the project and give them the
dictionary project web page www.dictionaryproject.
org - Request liaison to seek approval from district if
required - Request liaison to furnish list of schools with
address, number of third grade classes rooms and
numbers of students - Request school principles and third grade
teachers names - Request the district liaison to coordinate
setting up appointment times with the class
teachers for delivery of the dictionaries - Review District policy on photos in classrooms
and give TelecomPioneers photo release forms

- Dictionary Delivery
- Schedule two or three Pioneers (no more than
three) to deliver the dictionaries - Verify the delivery people have a vehicle large
enough to transport dictionaries - Wear Pioneer/Verizon shirts or Jackets (branding)
- Arrive at school 15 minutes before scheduled time
- Report to school office and identifying the group
as the dictionary delivery people - Sign in and get temporary ID (if required)
- Be sure that the dictionaries have either been
stamped or have a Club/council/chapter name plate
in them

- Classroom Dictionary Delivery
- School principal or office staff will escort
Pioneer group to classroom and introduce to the
teacher - Teacher will introduce the group to the class
- Pioneer group will have one person as the
spokesperson and they will introduce the others,
and tell if they are working or retired. A brief
description of what the TelecomPioneers are all
about and that we are a volunteer public service
club of Verizon. - When handing out the dictionaries explain that
these are theirs to keep and they may take them
home, note that there is a place in on the back
of the front cover for them to put their names - After everyone has their dictionaries ask if
anyone knows the longest word in the English
language --- tell them to go to page 365 and read
the longest word it has 1,909 letters. Point out
some other information in the dictionary as well - Take some PR photos with the Pioneers and
students/teachers.

- Follow Up PR
- Follow up by making available photos and
narrative to the local Verizon PR Dept and local
media - Send a copy to Steve Kohn of write up and any
pictures to stephenkohn_at_verizon.net - In a short time thank you notes and letters will
arrive from the students, teachers and
administrator from the school. Make these
available also - Send completed project info to Verizon Pioneer
web for possible publishing

- Over 4,858,174 children have received a
dictionary - In 2007 - 180,000 dictionaries were delivered to
children by Pioneers - TelecomPioneers have been involved with the
project for the past 4 years. - Our target is to reach every third-grade student
in the United States - Verizon TelecomPioneers have donated over 440,000
- Telcordia Pioneers have donated over 10,242
11Domestic Violence Awareness
- Domestic Violence Awareness
- Pioneers are involved in helping to bring
awareness to this issue. - All Chapters are involved in Domestic Violence
awareness initiatives in their area. - Shower for Shelters
- The Shower for the Shelter 2007
collection drive employee-giving campaign is a
Verizon Foundation-sponsored collection drive
with the goal of collecting new/unused personal
and household items from Verizon employees to
donate to local domestic violence shelters where
the employees work and live. - The collection drive will take place in
October during the first week of National
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October 1-5)
in approximately 300 Verizon Corporate, Telecom,
Business, VSO and Wireless locations throughout
the US. The objective for the Shower for
Shelters drive is to collect over 750 boxes full
of new personal/household items from employees
that will be donated to local area shelters. -

12Domestic Violence Awareness
- Project Hopeline
- Pioneers are active participants in this
initiative by collecting used cell phones at
their homes, offices and luncheons. This past
year phones were packaged and distributed to a
central point, refurbished or sold and the phones
or donations were made to local shelters in our
areas. This is an on-going project that can be
done throughout the year in Company locations, at
Life member Luncheons, year-end meetings and
anywhere Pioneers gather. - Health Kits
- Pioneer chapters assembled and have on hand
Health Kits that can be distributed to a national
disaster location as the need arises. These are
stored with each Chapter.
13 ProjectConnect
- A New enhanced version of ProjectConnect has
replaced the original ProjectConnect program - Users become part of TechForce a secret
international elite network of kids from around
the world whose mission is to protect the earth
and create a better future for mankind through
technology. - Each game has a new mission for the player to
accomplish and the ability to compete for high
scores against users anywhere in the world! - The one thing that didnt change is that its
FREE to all users.
14ProjectConnect
- Any groups that have been previously registered
must now be re-registered. Groups will be
re-registered and players will create their own
TechForce username and password within the new
flash screen. - Letters have been sent to all current users
outlining the re-registration process. - Another new features of ProjectConnect is pre-
and post-tests to be completed by the
students/users before and after the games are
played. - A general survey is also available to gather
opinions regarding the new upgraded games.

- The general survey is to be completed by
Pioneers, teachers, youth program leaders and
students - By completing the survey they can be entered into
a drawing for a new computer. - The surveys can be completed only one time by
clicking on the link in the website. - The computer give away on May 1, 2008, users must
have played through level one of each of the 7
games and completed the entire survey
16Power Up To Read (PUTR)
- Power Up To Read! is a reading program that
targets 4th and 5th graders - 4th and 5th graders are transitioning from
learning to read to reading to learn - Students are left behind in school if their
reading and comprehension does not develop at the
same rate as the average student - This program helps students build literacy
skills, improve reading comprehension and build
enthusiasm for reading and learning through an
interactive, multimedia approach
17PUTR
- Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a main
component of PUTR - UDL makes it possible for tutors to challenge and
supply the right amount of support to students to
achieve success - PUTR is also aligned with Language Arts and
technology standards for the targeted age group - PUTR fully supports the No Child Left Behind
goal - The online version is now available for general
use - All Chapters have a designated Coordinator
18Literacy Scholastic Books
- All Chapters are involved in literacy, education
and book distributions to some degree and should
keep being involved. - Our affiliation with Scholastic Books is that we
receive a discount on all book orders placed with
them, as well as, free shipping. We are
considered Literacy Partners and have a special
number that identifies us when placing orders.
Information about our Scholastic contact person
and ordering procedures can be found on the
VerizonPioneer.org website under
Scholastic/Seasons Readings. Maryland uses
their own and contact for the Book em program. - Each Chapter receives a catalog once a year with
updates and sales promotions occurring throughout
the year. - Pioneers are encouraged to take advantage of the
wonderful selection of books at great savings.

- Taken by the secretary (or designated person if
no secretary) - at every meeting.
- Should be written and sent out by email or mail
within one week of the meeting. - Action items should be highlighted and
summarized..should include the person responsible
and deadline for follow-up - Should include a single page identifying who made
the motion, who seconded the motion, any
discussion and whether the motion passed - Should also include a list of attendees at the
meeting and their titles. This includes any
guests and anyone that is absent. - A copy of the minutes must be sent to the PAC, as
well as, Steve Kohn after every meeting.

- TelecomPioneers (TCP) and the National Library
Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped
(NLS) and the Library of Congress (LS) have had a
partnership since 1960 to help empower others to
read. - The Talking Books Program through TCP and NLS
assists people who are unable to read standard
print material due to visual and/or physical
impairments by providing Braille and recorded
books and magazines that can be borrowed, free of
charge and delivered by postage-free mail.

- NLS operates a free library program by selecting,
producing and distributing books and magazines in
recorded formats - NLS also designed and manufactured special
playback equipment for use with audio materials. - Readership in 2005 was equivalent to around
783,891 751,569 audio users. - Approximately 43,000 cassette players are
manufactured by NLS annually. - NSL has an inventory of 713,893 cassette players
of which 526, 984 are assigned to program users. - Transition to digital audio technology has begun

- In July of 2007, Junior Achievement Worldwide
(JA) and TelecomPioneers (TCP) renewed their
partnership for another 3 years. - JA, similar to TCP, relies heavily on volunteers
to support their mission and programs. - JAs mission is to educate and inspire young
people to succeed in a global economy. - Through age-appropriate curriculum, JA programs
begin at the elementary school level, teaching
children how they can impact the world around
them as individuals, workers and consumers.

- JA and TCP have targeted two programs for
TelecomPioneer participation - Job Shadow Day which would be combined with
ProjectConnect - America Works focuses on the impact of
business, economics and entrepreneurship on the
economic development of the US during the 19th

information on JA support for TelecomPioneers

44Business Plan Budget Development
- Each Chapter must submit a Business Plan a
Budget by the end of November for the up coming
year. - Chapter Presidents and VPs begin the development
process during their training at the conference - This Business Plan Budget must include any
anticipated money to be raised and how. It must
also include any anticipated money to be spent
and where. - Your Chapter President will contact the
President of your Club about 1 to 2 months prior
to putting together the draft. - The PAC provides the Chapter President a copy of
the Chapters PL (Profit Loss) statement to
help with the Business Plan Budget process.
This is a very arduous and difficult task for the
Chapter. -
