1
Guidebook PM2.5-UpdateSmall scale combustion
  • Susanne Paulrud 2006-04-03

2
Guidebook PM2.5-Update
  • Small combustion installations and shipping
  • Combustion plants lt50 MW (boilers)
  • Residential plants

3
Guidebook PM2.5-Update
  • To find and collect emission factors for PM2.5
  • The work has so far been concentrated on biomass
    combustion plants
  • Most of the collected emission factors are from
residential wood combustion and from smaller
boilers, in the 0.1-10 MW range, predominately of
    the moving grate type

4
Projects in Sweden
  • In-field measurements of emissions from wood log
    boilers and wood log stoves
  • Laboratory measurements on PM2.5
  • Revision of emission factors from small scale
    wood combustion including PM2.5
  • There are several recently done thesis on fine
    particulate matter

5
Projects in Sweden
  • Most of these studies have shown that small scale
wood combustion (residential) typically lead to
    particle emissions dominated by submicron
particles (lt1 um) and no significant emissions of
particles larger than 10 um will normally be
    found.
  • Meaning that for residential PM10 is
    approximately equal to PM2.5
  • When updating PM2.5, PM10 and TSP needs to be
    updated as well

6
Studies in other countries
  • A new Finnish study. Research results from
combustion based fine particles (PM1, PM2.5)
  • In-field measurements on wood stoves in Denmark
  • Several American studies on PM2.5 from wood
    stoves and fireplaces

7
Summary
  • There are several new studies on particulate
    matter from residential biomass combustion
    (chapter 216 updated 2004)
  • We have found studies on particulate matter from
biomass combustion in boilers in the range 1-10
MW (chapter 111, PM not mentioned at all)

8
Additional information needed
  • Are there new studies on PM2.5 (PM10) on small
combustion (lt50 MW) installations in other
    European countries?
  • Other fuels?
  • Other techniques? Larger scale boilers (10-50 MW)
