Title: New Features with Windows XP Service Pack 2
1New Features with Windows XP Service Pack 2
2Windows XP SP2 Provides New Features
- There are many new enhancements with Service Pack
2. Many of these features will not be noticeable
and will operate in the background. - The two new features that you will notice with
Microsoft Windows XP SP2 are - Pop-up Blockers
- Firewall
3Pop-up Blockers
- Internet Explorer now contains an integrated
Pop-up blocker that is automatically activated
when your system is upgraded to Windows XP SP2.
The Pop-up blocker is capable of blocking most
instances of unwanted Pop-ups.
4How do I know when a Pop-up has been blocked?
- The first time a Pop-up is blocked you will see a
dialog box directing you to the new information
bar for more information. - The information bar is your primary source of
information for blocked content in Internet
Explorer.
5What options do I have once a Pop-up is blocked?
- Clicking on the Information bar when a site is
blocked allows you to choose from the following
choices - Temporarily Allow Pop-Ups- Temporarily allows
pop-ups to function for your current browsing
session. Future visits to this site will have
pop-ups blocked. - Always allow Pop-Ups from This Site -
Permanently allows pop-ups on the web site you
are visiting. This will prevent the pop-up
blocker from blocking content from this web site
in the future. - Settings - Allows you to customize the
functionality of the pop-up blocker.
6How do I permanently disable the pop-up blocker
on my PC?
- If you choose to disable this feature, you may do
so by selecting "Turn-off Pop-up Blocker from the
Pop-up Blocker section of the Tools menu.
7I've accidentally allowed Pop-ups from a site and
need to remove this site from the list.
- To manage the settings on Internet Explorer's
Pop-up blocker select "Pop-up Blocker
Settings" from the Pop-up Blocker section of the
Tools menu. Select the web site you would like
to remove and click Remove.
8How do I disable the sound generated when a
Pop-up is blocked?
- To manage the settings on Internet Explorer's
Pop-up blocker select "Pop-up Blocker
Settings" from the Pop-up Blocker section of the
Tools menu. Deselect the "Play a sound when a
pop-up is blocked" checkbox shown above.
9I am still seeing unwanted Pop-ups although my
pop-up blocker is enabled.
- Pop-up Blocker is smart enough to not block
pop-up windows that you open deliberately by
clicking a linkfor example, if you were on a
travel reservation site and you clicked a link to
open a pop-up window containing your confirmation
details, this pop-up window would not be blocked
because you opened it intentionally. - If you get similar pop-up windows no matter what
sites you visit or even if you're not on the Web
at all, you could have spyware, adware, or other
software on your computer that's launching
pop-ups. Please contact the help desk if you
believe this may be the case.
10XP Firewall
- Windows XP SP2 includes a PC firewall to protect
your computer from receiving unwanted traffic.
The integrated firewall attempts to block all
incoming network connections that the user did
not initiate.
11The XP Firewall is notifying me with a security
alert. Is this normal?
- While most unwanted traffic will be automatically
blocked, Windows XP will prompt the user with a
Security notification when a program running on
your computer attempts to use a network resource
protected by the firewall. When this event
occurs, the user will be asked to select one of
three choices - Keep Blocking- When you select this option,
Windows Firewall does not allow the program to
operate or to listen on the protected port. It
will be permanently blocked. - Unblock- When you select this option, the program
is permanently allowed to utilize system
resources without restrictions. - Ask me Later- When you select this option,
Windows Firewall does not allow the program to
operate or to listen, but will not be permanently
blocked.
12I've accidentally blocked a program that needs to
be allowed. Can I remove this block?
- The list of permanently blocked and allowed
programs can be accessed through the Control
Panel. Selecting the Exceptions tab of "Windows
Firewall" will allow you to review the list of
blocked and excluded programs. - Programs appearing with a check mark are
permanently allowed, while programs appearing
without a check mark are permanently blocked.
After making desired changes, click OK.
13Can I shut down the firewall?
- For security purposes, the firewall is enabled on
all campus computers and can not be disabled.
