by-products as livestock fodder

The food industry produces large quantities of
by-products that are being used as a feed source
(fig. 1). Food scares such as the BSE crisis and
the MPA affair have put a pressure on the use of
by-products on behalf of food safety. However,
from a food security point of view using
by-products to feed livestock can be seen as a
sustainable option for waste handling, because an
inedible food stream is transformed into a high
quality food product. It is, therefore,
interesting to analyse the impact of refraining
from using by-products as livestock feed on the
availability of meat.
