Title: Launched by:
1 To the Moon, Amigos!
- Launched by
- Joanne Diggle
- Maureen McConnell
- Patricia Morris
2Exploring the Moon
- For thousands of years people have dreamed of
reaching the moon.
- On July 20, 1969, the dream of reaching the Moon
came true.
- Neil Armstrong, an astronaut aboard the Apollo 11
space flight, became the first person ever to
step on the Moon!
3- As Neil Armstrong climbed from the spacecraft and
placed his foot on the dusty lunar surface he
said the famous words, Thats one small step for
a man, one giant leap for mankind.
4By the Light of the Silvery Moon
- The moon is not like the sun. It does not
produce its own light.
- Moonlight is really sunlight reflected off the
Moon to the Earth!
5 The Moon -A Different Place
- There is no atmosphere on the Moon.
- Its surface is dry, dusty, and rocky.
- Like Earth, the Moon has mountain ranges.
6- Maria, the name given to low, flat areas, is from
Latin, meaning sea.
- The dark areas are filled with lava (liquid
rock).
- Craters are holes created when space objects hit
the Moons surface.
7A Day on the Moon
- No air.
- No sound.
- No water.
- The sky always looks dark.
- The same side of the Moon always faces the Earth.
8Atmosphere
- An atmosphere is an invisible layer of gases that
surrounds a planet.
- Earths atmosphere is made up of a few different
gases, including oxygen.
- The atmosphere protects Earth from the dangerous
rays of the sun.
9Is it cold or is it hot?
- Because the Moon does not have an atmosphere, the
temperature range is extreme.
- During the day, the temperature goes up to 130oC
or 265oF.
- At night, the temperature drops to -110oC or
-170oF.
10Gravity
- Gravity is an invisible force that holds us and
all the things around us to the Earth.
- Gravity causes objects to have weight.
11Gravity on the Moon
- The Moons gravity is weaker than the Earths
gravity.
- We would weigh much less on the Moon than we do
here on Earth.
- You would be able to jump much higher on the Moon
than you do here on Earth.
12Weightless
- Because there is no gravity in space, everything
floats.
13Orbit
The path the moon travels in around the Earth is
called an orbit.
14The Moons Movements
- The Moon moves in two ways.
- It revolves around, or orbits, the Earth.
- While it is orbiting Earth, the Moon also
rotates, or spins like a top.
15Phases of the Moon
- The moon looks different at different times of
the months.
- These are called phases of the moon.
16New Moon
The Moon cycle starts with the dark new moon.
Its sunlit side is facing away from the Earth.
17Waxing Moon
A small crescent moon is seen next. The moon is
getting bigger. It is called waxing.
18First phase of the moon
We see a half-moon at the first quarter phase.
The Moon has traveled one-quarter of its orbit.
19Full Moon
This is the full moon. It happens 14 days after
the new moon.
20Third quarter phase
The Moon has traveled three-quarters of its orbit
at the third-quarter phase.
21Waning Moon Phase
The lit surface grows smaller. It is called a
waning gibbous.
22Moons Phases and Orbit
23 The Man-in-the-MoonThe
Man-in-the-Moon
- People in the United States think the full moon
looks like a face.
- The face is the pattern formed by the light and
dark areas of the Moons surface.
- From Earth, the brightest parts of the Moon are
the mountains. They are the white areas of the
man-in-the-Moon.
24- The darkest parts of the Moons surface are lava
filled craters called maria. They are the gray
areas of the man-in-the-Moon.
- The most famous parts of the Moons surface are
the holes called craters.
25What do you see when you look at
the Moon?
- People in Peru see a fox in the Moon.
- People in Mexico, Korea, and Japan see a rabbit
in the Moon.
- People in China see a toad in the Moon.
