-
- Battle of the Books is a reading incentive
program for grades 4-6. This is the third year
this event will be sponsored by several school
libraries within the Kent School District. - This is the first year Emerald Park will
compete.

- Sasquatch and Young Readers Choice Award Books
- Read as many of the books as you can
- Form teams in each classroom before the
competition in May - Classroom competition
- Grade-level competition
- School-wide (4, 5, 6) competition
- The school champions will travel to another
school to face the winners from each

whaling ship. So begins the adventure of a
lifetime in which Manjiro becomes an accomplished
seaman, traveler, ambassador, and scholar.

In 1895 young Nathan wants nothing more than to
be an elite "storm warrior," one of the brave men
of the U.S. Lifesaving Service on Pea Island, off
the North Carolina shore. Nathan is coached in
lifesaving skills by the Pea Island crew and
dares to hope that one day he may share in their
ranks. But after helping with a particularly
difficult rescue, Nathan is forced to face the
truth He does not have the courage required to
go out into the raging, storming sea. Nathan
then must realize that there are other ways to
save lives and discover his true destiny.
30The Monsters of Morley Manorby Bruce Colville
Sixth-grader Anthony and his younger sister Sarah
find a box of small metal statues at the estate
sale of Morley Manor. When the figures get wet,
they come alive as the Morleskievich family,
which includes a werehuman, a vampire, and a
snaky-haired siren. The Morleys, as they are now
named, have a history that includes science,
magic, time travel, and Transylvania. These
monsters lead Anthony and Sarah on fantastical
adventures to other worlds in an effort to try to
save Earth from the Flinduvians.
31The Edison MysteryQwerty Stevens Back in Time
Seriesby Dan Gutman
Thirteen-year-old Qwerty uses the time machine
he finds in his back yard to visit Thomas
Edisons workshop in West Orange, New Jersey in
1879. There he helps the famous inventor develop
the electric light bulb, but then he needs his
older sister Barbaras help to return to his own
time. This story is filled with interesting
facts about Edisons life, opinions, and staff,
while giving the reader a glimpse of life in the
19th century.
32Time Stops for No Mouseby Michael Hoeye
Hermux Tantamoq, mouse watchmaker extraordinaire,
is asked to repair a unique watch in a short time
for Linka Perflinger. A suspicious rat comes to
retrieve the watch, which worries Hermux. When
he follows the rat and discovers the kidnapping
of Linka, his life changes forever. Fantasy and
mystery are packaged together in this mouse tale
while Hermux attempts to find the missing Linka.
33One Small Dogby Johanna Hurwitz
Curtis mom gives in and decides to let him have
a dog from the animal shelter after his parents
get a divorce. The little dog gets into mischief,
chews things, barks, and disturbs the neighbors.
He also gets very territorial and bites.
Eventually, Curtis is bitten and has to go to the
hospital. The dog has to be taken away, but
Curtis' father finds a home for the dog in the
country. The afterward is written by a dog
trainer who talks about what went wrong and the
responsibilities of dog ownership. This is a
strong thought provoking novel.
34Judy Moody Gets Famous!by Megan McDonald
Judy has a mood for every occasionand this time
shes in a jealous mood. Jealous of Jessica
Finch, who gets her picture on the front page of
the newspaper. When Judy sets off in pursuit of
her own fame and happiness, watch out. She is so
determined she just might find itor she might
merely become more un-famous than ever.
35Some Kind of Prideby Maria Testa
Named after the mighty Babe Ruth, Ruth DiMarco
has some big shoes to fill. But shes already
well on her way to achieving her dream of
becoming a major-league baseball player.
Eleven-year-old Ruth is the star shortstop in her
small Maine hometown, and now a reporter is
coming to interview her for Sports Illustrated.
Ruth seems to be at the top of her game. Then
one day she overhears her father in the crowd
Real major-league talent. But I cant help
thinking what a shame it is that its all wasted
on a girl. Suddenly Ruth doubts herself, her
dream, and the game she loves.
36Love, Ruby Lavenderby Deborah Wiles
Ruby Lavender and Miss Eula are a pretty good
team, for a couple of chicken thieves. What
other granddaughter-grandmother duo would drive
the getaway car for chickens rescued from the
slaughterhouse? But now Miss Eula has left for
Hawaii to visit her new (smelly) grandbaby. Poor
Ruby. Stuck in boring old Halleluia,
Mississippi, with nothing to do except read to
her chickens and sweep floors. But nine-year-old
Ruby is in for some BIG surprises which will turn
her summer upside down.

A young student, who comes to love poetry through
a personal understanding of what different famous
poems mean to him, surprises himself by writing
his own inspired poem.
38 Rowan of Rin by Emily Rodda
Because only he can read the magical map, young,
weak, and timid Rowan joins six other villagers
to climb a mountain and try to restore their
water supply, as fears of a dragon and other
horrors threaten to drive them back.
39 Dial-A-Ghost by Eva Ibbotson
A family of nice ghosts protects a British orphan
from the diabolical plans of his evil guardians.
40 Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath
Eleven-year-old Primrose, living in a small
fishing village in British Columbia, recounts her
experiences and all that she learns about human
nature and the unpredictability of life in the
months after her parents are lost at sea.
41 Parsifals Page by Gerald Morris
In medieval England, eleven-year-old Piers' dream
comes true when he becomes page to Parsifal, a
peasant whose quest for knighthood reveals
important secrets about both of their families.
42 The School Story by Andrew Clements
After twelve-year-old Natalie writes a wonderful
novel, her friend Zoe helps her devise a scheme
to get it accepted at the publishing house where
