  • Conference participants will learn how human
    development training is geared to help health
    educators, social workers, nurses and promotoras
    better understand the behavior change process in
    the work they do as educators.
  • Social interactive and learning processes will be
    used to demonstrate the cognitive behavior model
    and basic facilitation skills.

  • Be able to recognize the behavior cognitive
    process and its relationship with their role as
    social workers or health educators
  • Be able to develop a personal management plan
    that will help them prioritize their personal and
    professional roles and responsibilities and
  • Increase their facilitation skills using an

    problem solve.

  • Perinatal Depression Networking, Education and
    Training -- PDNET
  • First meeting October 2003. (Has been meeting
    regularly ever since.)
  • Vision  A Texas where perinatal mood disorders
    are recognized and treated with compassion
    without judgment.

  • Mission  To facilitate the identification,
    treatment and access to care of women
    experiencing perinatal mood disorders.
  • Goals
  • Increase awareness about prenatal mood disorders.
  • Increase the availability of resources and
    treatment.
  • Increase access to mental health services.

  • Obstetricians, mental health providers,
    representatives from TMA, TAOG, Association of
    Texas Midwives, La Leche League, Doulas of North
    American, Heart of Texas Lactaton Consultants,
    MOD, TxHSA, Mental Health Association of Houston,
    Family Connections, academia, the clergy,
    pharmacy companies, consumers, HHSC and DSHS
    staff, and other interested parties.

  • Activities 
  • Pamphlet Debby Cortez spearheaded a project to
    develop a public awareness pamphlet on the topic
    of perinatal depression.
  • Overtime, the project has morphed into becoming a
    component of the SB 316, Information for Parents
    of Newborn Children, brochure. 
  • This brochure, which addresses newborn screening,
    immunization and shaken baby syndrome in addition
    to perinatal depression, is currently available
    in English and Spanish on the DSHS Maternal and
    Child Health website and will soon be available
    for ordering from the DSHS warehouse.

  • Pilot Project  
  • A subcommittee that included PDNET members from
    TXHSA, UTHSCSA and DSHS developed Healthy
    Families, Healthy Communities, a multifactoral
    model in three phases 
  • Phase I - Community Awareness Outreach
  • Phase II - Provider Training
  • Phase III - Screening, Triage and Referral.

  • With the loss of the Postpartum Resource Center
    of Texas 24/7 multilingual hotline, PDNET is
    looking at options to ensure that this needed
    triage and referral service is provided in
    Texas.
