DELHI   The capital city of Independent India
is often the starting point of a visit to India.
Like Rome it is an eternal city and is a name
with music in it for most of the people. For
Indians it is the capital of their country, the
centre of power and culture for the simple
villager it is identified as the home of
Panditji, as Mr. Nehru was affectionately known.
For foreigners who have read of it in their
newspaper and seen on their Television, it is a
strange, and sometimes puzzling blend of ancient
and modern, of pageantry and socialistic
planning. There are today two Delhi's Old
Delhi - the city built by Shahjahan the man who
built the Taj Mahal and New Delhi - built by the
British in 1931. It is this juxtaposition of the
Old and the New one which is one of the
attraction of the capital. While the Old Delhi
evokes a distinctly oriental atmosphere, New
Delhi has wide avenues and imposing office
buildings. Both the cities with monuments and
mosques that can keep any tourist happy for days.
Old  Delhi. Ferozshah Kotla. Is the site of
the city Ferozabad built in the 14th century by
Emperor Ferozshah Tughlaq.  The famed 14
metre-high polished sandstone Ashoka Pillar
carrying Emperor Ashoka's message of peace which
stands here today is around 2,300 years old.
Ferozabad, the fifth city was demolished by Shah
Johan (17th century) to built Shahjahanabad. Rajg
hat. This simple square platform of Black Marble
on the banks of the River Yamuna marks the place
where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated.  His last
words "He'ram" are inscribed on a platform which
is surrounded by a serene garden. Red Fort.
Emperor Shah Jehan, the builder of the Taj Mahal
built Delhi's most magnificent monument, the Red
Fort, in 1648.  Some of the buildings it encloses
are Diwan-I-am or the hall meant for public
audiences Diwan-I-Khas, where private audiences
were granted Rang Mahal, the water cooled
apartment of the royal ladies the Pearl Mosque,
a lovely, ornate dream in white marble.

centre, and in its ancient, narrow lanes is kept
alive the traditional workmanship, which makes
Delhi famous. New Delhi India Gate. It is a
majestic high arch, 42 metres high, built as a

the 13th century and is one of the greatest
bequests of Islamic culture.  At its base lies
the Quwwatul-Islam Masjid, the first mosque in
India. Iron Pillar. A famous iron pillar of the
5th century, inside Qutub Minar complex.  It has
remained rust free for 1500 years.  According to
local belief if you can get your fingers to
touch, with your back to the pillar, your wishes
will be granted. Rashtrapati Bhawan. It is the
official residence of the President Of India,
formerly the residence of the Viceroy of India,
it has a magnificent view of the Rajpath and
symmetrical North and South Block Government
offices.  Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and
occupied  in  1929,  it  is  set   in  330  acres
of land. Imperial  in design, it has spacious
staterooms and an elegant Mughal Garden open to

COCHIN NOW KNOWN AS KOCHI Is regarded as one of
the beauty spot of India. The port of Cochin is
known as the queen of the Arabian Sea and the
industrial hub of the state where the ancient
civilisation mingles with the 20th century.
Cruising in the backwaters is a real pleasure and
is the most fascinating way to observe the
countryside. Vasco-Da-Gama was buried here in
1524 but 14 years late the remains were taken
away to Portugal.   Sightseeing of Cochin city
-   JEWISH SYNAGOGUE, MATTANCHERRY DUTCH
PALACE, JEW TOWN, ST. FRANCIS CHURCH, CHINESE
FISHING NETS, HIGH COURT BUILDING, BROAD WAY
SHOPPING CENTRE AND SANTA CRUZ CATHEDRAL.   The
Back Waters Of Cochin The dominant colours are
the deep green of paddy fields and palm groves,
the azure blue of the sky and the golden shimmer
of the sun on the ripples of the waterways. As
you cruise through slowly past coconut palms
dipping down towards the water and serene
villages, you can see the living portrait of
Keralas rural life. Other country craft will go
by, some carrying a load of fresh bananas or
coir, others filled with people travelling nearby
villages.   Places you visit during Motor launch
ride on the back waters -   BOLGHATTY ISLAND,
VALLARPADAM, VYPEEN ISLAND AND ANCIENT ROMAN
CATHOLIC CHURCH . Normally Cochin backwater
cruise includes the sightseeing of Cochin by
boat. Visiting, JEWISH SYNAGOGU - the magnificent
structure was built in 1568. The Great Scrolls of
the Old Testament, copper plates of inestimable
historical worth containing the privileges
granted to Jews by the Cochin Maharajas, and the
exquisite Chinese hand painted tiles are of great
interest.  DUTCH PALACE - was built by
Portuguese and presented to the Maharaja of
Cochin in 1568. At the centre of the building is
a large coronation hall. Seventeenth century
mural paintings depicting scenes from the India
epic Ramayana can be seen in the Palace.  ST.

MUNNAR The Land of the Miracle Blossom -
Legend has it that 3 mountain maidens who were
the best of friends fell under a curse and were
separated from each other. So much did they pine
for one another's company that a kind sage turned
them into streams and they sped down the
mountains and were united at Munnar. Join
Muthirapuzha, Nallathani and Kundala, the 3
giggling, gurgling mountain rivulets as they trip
and tumble down the rocks in their urgency to
meet at Munnar. They also give Munnar its name,
which literally means ' 3 streams Perhaps the
best way to drink in the sights of Munnar is from
the Pothamedu View. This is the highest point of
the Kannan Devan hills and is a locally
well-known but little publicised look out point.
Pothamedu makes for a impressive contrast to the
verdant expanse below - hard, grey rocks that
rise menacingly into the sky as they are embraced
by the clouds. Straight ahead is peak after peak,
garlanded by cotton candy clouds - the summits
seemingly disappearing into the sky. In the
silence that pervades, the only sound is the
distant roar of the Attakadu waterfalls.   The
drive up to Eravikulam ensconced on Rajamalai
makes for an exhilarating ride along narrow,
winding paths that twist and turn precariously.
The beautiful Nayamakkad waterfalls enroute begin
in a cavernous home in the mountains and cascade
in torrents over several layers of rocks before,
surprisingly, coming to a tame end. Nayamakkad
feeds the tea estates that cling to the sides of
Rajmalai.   Set amid South India's most dramatic
mountain scenery in what was once known as the
'High range of Travancore, the tiny hill town of
Munnar (1524 m) is the commercial centre of some
of the world's highest tea growing estates.
The combination of craggy peaks, manicured tea
estates and crisp mountain air makes Munnar a
delightful alternative to the better known hill
stations of Tamil Nadu but if you don't make the
effort to get away from the scruffy immediacy of
the main bazaar you may altogether miss the
beauty and tranquillity of the countryside.
  Sightseeing of Munnar   CHRIST'S CHURCH,
ERAVIKULAM NATIONAL PARK, ANAMUDI (SOUTH INDIA'S
HIGHEST PEAK), TOP STATION AND TEA PROCESSING
FACTORIES.

PERIYAR NATIONAL PARK Periyar is one of
Indias picturesque reserves. The sanctuary is
set around the artificial lake formed by damming
the Periyar river, led to the submersion of a
large forest area and the formation of 55 sq. km
lake. There are stumps and branches of the dead
trees in the lake giving a fossilised appearance.
In the words of the leading naturalist, M.
Krishnan, Nowhere in India, nowhere else in the
world, can one observe these great beasts in such
variety and so many circumstances as here-herds,
parties, lone bulls, veterans long past their
prime and calves barely a week old, elephants of
all shapes and size can all be seen here.
BOAT RIDE ON LKE PERIYAR The most enjoyable
part of seeing the wildlife is going around the
lake in a boat. From the safety of a boat you can
witness herds of wild elephants coming down to
water and swim. The other prominent fauna be seen
are Tiger, Sambar, Barking deer, Mouse deer,
Nilgiri Tahr, Wild Pigs, Wild dogs, Porcupine,
Lion-tailed macaque, Malabar Squirrel, Flying
Squirrel, Sloth Bear, Gaur and Black Languor
(Monkey). Tiger and Leopards seldom come to the
lakeside by day. Early morning enjoy
walking into the jungle for viewing Wild Life.

KUMARAKOM LAKE RESORT Kumarakom- (The
Backwater Experience) Kumarakom popularly known
for its bird santurary is an island 16 Kilometres
west of Kottayam, a much sought after holidays
destination for its backwater experience.
Kumarakom is surrounded by the Vembanad lake and
the land has lots of streams and canals which
provide for an ideal tourist experience in this
otherwise sleepy agricultural and fishing
township. Kumarakom Lake Resorts-
Aesthetically developed on the shores of the
Vembanad Lake , Kumarakom Lake Resort has been
bestowed the Heritage Resort status. The property
has been exquisitely landscaped with numerous
meandering in and around the 22 heritage cottages
reconstructed over the 25 acres of Picturesque
greenery overlooking the stretch of the lake Each
cottage pertains to a traditional style of the
illams (homesteads ) and has a legacy . The
Cottages have been painstakingly plucked from
various villages in Kerala and transplanted . The
mesmerizing 28 poolside villas, perched grandly
on the meandering poolside is perhaps the only of
its kind in Asia. The Two Presidential Suits
facing the lake with private swimming pools are a
indulgence for sybarites. Guest can explore the
backwaters on transformed Kettuvallams
(traditional rice boats converted to cosy
houseboats) even spending a whole night on the
lake Right on the bank of the lake is the
swimming pool with a Jacuzzi enclosure -a real
magical viewing spot of the lake and horizon.
Ayurmana the 200 years old nalukettu (four sided
mansion )provides ayurvedic care and yoga
session. The fabulous ettukettu (eight sided
mansion ) restaurant serves some lip-smacking
Native, Indian Continental and Chinese gourmets.
A fully equipped conference hall provide for
corporate holiday meetings . For a feel of the
traditional performing arts there are renderings
for Kathakali, Mohniyattam,Koothu......
Around the resort...... Riceboats and small
ships used to ply these waters carrying coconut ,
rubber rice and spices to various trading centres
of Kerala. It's an incredibly different
experience to cruise in the backwaters on country
boats absorbing the beauty of Kerala villages.
The people of the backwaters know the spots
where shoals of fresh water mussels breed
Anchoring their county boats over these places
they dive deep and bring up basket loads of
mussels. The shells are then burnt in kilns on
the banks making an excellent building lime.

BOMBAY On the west coast of India, is an
attractive blend of the East and the West. This
cosmopolitan city of India, is very beautiful
surrounded as it is on all sides by the sea. The
sea front at Bombay is spectacular. Palms and
Skyscrapers line the citys main promenade by the
sea. From the surrounding hills, picture at night
is of a necklace worn by the sea. Ten kms off
Bombay on a small island ELEPHANTA, are the
famous 8th century cave temples containing
magnificent sculptures. Sightseeing of
Bombay City GATEWAY OF INDIA This was where King
George V and Queen Mary stepped ashore in 1911,
enroute to make the starting announcement at the
Delhi Durbar that New Delhi was to replace
Calcutta as the Capital of India. In Bombay,
they were welcomed by a hastily constructed white
plaster arch on the Bunder pier that was replaced
in 1927 by the present Gateway of India, designed
by George Wittet, with its cosmopolitan melange
of traditional Hindu, Muslim, and Gujarati
styles, notably the minarets and trelliswork
jalis. India Gate was also the site where on
February 28, 1948, the Somerset Light Infantry,
to the tune of Auld Lang Syne, wrapped up the
Union Jack and boarded vessels for England,
ending more than two centuries of British
rule. PRINCE OF WALES MUSEUM Set in a circular
garden on Mahatma Gandhi road, which commemorates
that monarchs first visit to India. This leafy
marble oasis in the midst of Bombays bustle
contains one of Indias best collections of art
and artifacts. FLORA FOUNTAIN Where a short walk
east brings you to Hornimans Circle. HANGING
GARDENS. Which were landscaped in 1881 and
immediately became popular with memsahib
watercolorists as a locale for botanical
sketches. Despite the Gothic-sounding name, the
gardens are very sedate but do have one
intriguing attraction-a gardener who transforms
his hedges into astonishing abstract art
compositions. PARSI TOWER OF SILENCE The round
stone construction in which the Parsis place
their dead to be devoured by vultures. These
structures are designed in much the same way as a
lobster-net-to prevent vultures from flying out
with body parts in their talons. A series of
towers have been built since Aungier leased the
Parsi community the one square kilometre site in
1673, and today the area is potentially some of
the most valuable real estate in Bombay, but is
ardently protected by the Parsis. CRAWFORD MARKET
Built by Arthur Crawford in 1867, is the most
grandiose market building in India. Tattered
sunlight turns the dust into incense scented
screens as you wander through the chaotic maze of
cool passages, each a division of wares. The
best time to visit is around seven in the
morning, when armies of slender collies balance
silvery basins of fresh fish on their heads,
chickens run riot and immense troughs of fruits
and vegetables are unloaded amidst a cacophony of
squeals, shouts and thuds. It has immense
character here you find sly Marwari traders
hawking false mustaches and crocheted caps, the
fragile like dried bombay duck fish, giant sacks
of grain, brightly coloured spices, caged Assam
parrots, Labrador puppies and fighting cocks. If
you crane your neck, its possible to make out
Rudyards father, Lock-wood Kiplings bas
relief's on the markets facade
