4THE SONY NAME
- Ibuka, after looking through dictionaries, came
up with the Latin word SONUS -meaning sound. - American words were becoming popular in Japan and
some people referred to bright, young and cute
boys as Sonny or Sonny -boys. - They dropped one of the letters to SONY
- and that was it!!

16The Walkman Story
- Ibuka came into his office one day with a
portable stereo tape recorder and a pair of
standard headphones. He was unhappy and
complained about the weight of the system. - He ordered his engineers to strip out the
recording circuit and the speaker and replace
them with a stereo amplifier. He also wanted
very lightweight headphones. - Marketing people were unenthusiastic. They said
it wouldnt sell. However, from the very
beginning the Walkman was a runaway success,
despite having to have tailored shirts roller
skates! - Launch of Walkman took place in 1979. Twenty
million sold in the first eight years.
